Leg Pain

Leg pain is the experience of pain or discomfort, that is usually treated by self-care and the pain should go away. However, if it does not, it may reflect severe medical conditions in which you should schedule an appointment with your GP and discuss what signs and symptoms of your pain, in order for the doctor to correctly diagnose your condition based on your medical history and X-ray.

What are the symptoms of Leg Pain?

The pain experienced can be constant or intermittent, and develop suddenly or gradually. Leg pain can present in your entire leg or a localized area.

What are the causes of Leg Pain?

Most leg pain is caused by wear and tear or injuries at the joints (location where bones connect), bones, muscles, ligaments (connective tissues that join one bone to another) and tendons (connective tissues that attach muscle to bone). Problems in your lower spine can also lead to leg pain.

Leg pain can also indicative of certain medical conditions, like bone cancer, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots), atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries), gout (crystals form around joints), herniated disc causing sciatica (compressed nerves in lower back by the spinal cord), muscle cramp or strain, Paget’ disease of bone (disruption of bone homeostasis), spinal stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal) and arthritis (joint inflammation).

Medications such as corticosteroids have side effects which will cause leg pain.

Benign and malignant tumours in the bone may lead to episodes of pain in the legs as well.

How is Leg Pain treated?

Minor leg pain can be treated by proper care. Reduce using your legs as much as possible. You can also apply an ice pack wrapped in towel for 15 minutes few times a day. Pain can also be relieved by medications, for example over-the-counter painkillers.

If, however, your pain gets worse and you notice swelling in both legs even after home remedy, schedule an appointment with your GP and have your legs checked.

If your leg pain is due to deep cut and you are unable to put weight on your leg, call for immediate medical help as it may have severe problems.
