An MRI scan is a magnetic resonance imaging scan. It is a safe and painless test that can give a detailed image of organs and other structures in the body. It does that by using a strong magnetic field to create radio waves, which can create an image on a computer.

The MRI scanner is tunnel like structure, approximately 1.5 meters long. A large circular magnet surrounds it. You lie on the bed and slide into the tunnel until the body part being scanned is inside of the scanner. The whole procedure can usually take around 15-40 minutes and is painless. It may be a bit uncomfortable as it is quite enclosed and loud once inside the scanner. You will be given some headphones to protect your ears from the noise. A radiographer will be in the control room next to the scanner and you will be able to talk to them using an intercom if you have any problems.

The MRI scanner using strong magnets, therefore it is important that you tell your doctor or radiographer about any medical implants or devices in your body with metal in them. This includes: an internal defibrillator, a pacemaker, an ear implant, artificial heart valves, artificial limbs, pins, screws, surgical clips and stents. Your hospital should give you information about the requirements before you go for your MRI scan.

What happens after the procedure? (MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan))

There are no side effects from the scan, you can return to normal activity. A radiologist who sends a report to your doctor examines the pictures from the scan.
