About

Mr Shahz Ahmed is an internationally renowned Consultant Rhinologist based at University Hospital Birmingham. He has over 20 years of experience and specialises in all aspects of advanced sinus surgery and nasal surgery for both function and cosmetic reasons. This includes rhinoplasty, septorhinoplasty and revision surgery. He also has a specialist interest for endoscopic pituitary and skull base surgery. In 2017, Mr Ahmed performed the endoscopic pituitary operation entirely under local anaesthetic to save the sight of an 87 year old man. This was a world first and was met with international acclaim.

Mr Ahmed graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1997 with two degrees, having obtained a Bachelor of Science degree alongside his medical degree. Following this he completed specialist training in Ear, Nose and Throat surgery before undertaking fellowships in South Africa, America, Germany and Switzerland.

He was appointed as a consultant at University Hospital Birmingham in 2010, which remains his NHS base. In 2013 he was awarded a PhD for his ground-breaking research into chronic sinus disease. He was appointed as clinical service lead for his department in 2018.

Mr Ahmed is a keen advocate of teaching, and is director of the Rhinology Fellowship programme at University Hospital Birmingham, mentoring registrars and consultants in advanced rhinology and skull base surgery. He is regularly invited to speak at both national and international rhinology conferences and hosts his own annual international masterclass to train other surgeons. He has an active interest in clinical research, publishing extensively in international scientific journals and has written over a dozen book chapters.
