Explanation

Having been suffering from pain and limited mobility in both shoulders, I was referred by my GP to a shoulder specialist at CircleBath early in 2016. Following approval by medical insurers and an X-Ray at my local hospital, I was seen by Mr Chambler within 2 weeks. His initial recommendation was for steroid injections under ultrasound guidance into both shoulder joints. This took place within 2 days and the ultrasound scans indicated 2 torn tendons in one shoulder with inflamed tendons in the other. After 3 weeks, it was clear that the steroid injections had provided only limited relief and following further discussions with Mr Chambler I agreed to proceed with his recommendation for the replacement of my right shoulder joint. Mr Chambler went though in detail with me the various options for replacement surgery and the benefits of proceeding with a ceramic prosthesis. Availability of the prosthesis and Easter holidays meant that it was a further 5 weeks before the surgery was carried out. A pre-assessment visit to CircleBath enabled all the necessary checks, such as blood tests and an ECG to be completed clearing the way for my admission for surgery. Having arrived early, I was shown straight to my room and met both the anaesthetist and surgeon who again went through the detail of the forthcoming surgery including explaining the risks. The operation itself went extremely well and I was back in my room within a couple of hours. The nursing staff were most attentive and ensured that I was comfortable and that pain relief and medication was maintained. Catering too was excellent although my lack of appetite could not do justice to the delicious selection on offer. I was out of bed later in the day and saw the physio for initial exercises and mobilising the joint. After a two night stay I was fit to be discharged and left with detailed instructions on the care of the wound, as well as a protocol for the ongoing rehabilitation by my local physiotherapist.
