About

Mr Andrew Mishreki is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon, with an NHS practice at University Hospital North Durham, and private practice based at Spire Washington Hospital.

In Mr Mishreki's NHS practice he sits as Trust Cancer Lead for County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust, whilst at Spire Washington he sits on the Medical Advisory Council.

Mr Mishreki's practice encompasses the full remit of general surgery and colorectal surgery, all of which he performs with advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) and minimally invasive (including trans-anal) techniques, including:

  • Hernia and gallbladder surgery
  • The investigation and treatment of colorectal and anorectal disorders, and all bowel related diseases
  • Colorectal cancer surgery
  • Endoscopic procedures for the upper GI tract (OGD) and lower GI tract (colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy)

Following qualification in medicine from The University of Birmingham, Mr Mishreki carried out his basic surgical training in the West Midlands and the South West, before completing his higher surgical training in the North East of England. Alongside fellowship examinations (Royal College of Surgeons of England), he achieved a Master of Surgery degree with merit during this time. Towards the end of his training, Mr Mishreki had the honour of being awarded the prestigious ACPGBI (Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland) travelling fellowship, gaining a unique experience in the world's largest Intestinal Failure unit (Nebraska, USA), treating the most complex of bowel conditions during this time.

Following completion of his training, Mr Mishreki undertook a year's fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand, focusing on advanced laparoscopic (keyhole), minimally invasive surgical techniques, and complex colorectal cancer surgery. Mr Mishreki then took up his current post as Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at University Hospital of North Durham.

Mr Mishreki has published in many peer reviewed journals, and recently has been pivotal in the development of a new state of the art laparoscopic operating theatre that has opened at University Hospital North Durham.

His varied and valuable experiences, highly specialised skill-set, and demanding NHS practice, enable Mr Mishreki to provide the highest possible standard of care for his patients.

Explanation

When I first met Mr Mishreki he made me feel that I was in safe hands; he has a calm reassuring manner. Even when he had to explain to me that it was not certain that my circumstances would have a happy outcome, because the tumour found in my bowel was malignant. He read my mood and led me through the information so carefully that I did not feel at all fearful. I was thankful that I was being looked after by Mr Mishreki and felt confident from th beginning that if it was possible to deal with the cancer; I would receive the best possible result from the diagnosis under his care. It was reassuring to know that he is an exceptionally gifted surgeon yet I also found him to be kind and respectful towards me at all times. He explained each stage of the process to me as results from various test came back. Always confirming that I undersood, always asking if I had any questions. Like many people I have been afraid of cancer most of my life and now even at 79 years old having Mr Mishreki as my surgeon I was hopeful and unafraid. I was relieved and grateful that he was looking after me; I very much admire his skill as a surgeon and his manner as a person. Post surgery I was discharged from hospital after a week I rested at home for a week my bowel movements became normal and the next week I was up and about.I will be for ever grateful that at a difficult time in my life I was dealt with by Mr Mashreki.

I found Mr Mishreki very approachable, friendly with any understanding manner and could ask him any questions about my condition throughout my consultations. He gave me answers that I could understand about my conditions and gave me advice I could relate to. My life since the procedure has been so much better in so many ways I can't really explain properly here. Thank you so much Mr Meshreki. Kindest regards.

Andrew is a colleague who I work with regularly, regularly discussing cases requiring a combined colorectal and gynaecological input. This includes planning and operating on complex cases requiring surgery for benign or malignant disease. The majority of these cases involve "key-hole" surgery which benefits the patient. I can recommend him as as a skilled surgeon, who is up to date with current research and advances in his field, and is always attempting to ensure he is improving in his practice. He is very patient focused and ensures that there is a shared decision making approach to all cases, with the patient's voice always heard. Once again I can recommend him as a colorectal surgeon, without any reservations.
