Dr Saifee had the job of diagnosing Parkinson's for a patient who was otherwise fit and well and who had been living with a right hand tremor for over a year. This diagnosis was a complete shock as I'd been given the all-clear following an MRI scan in late 2023 and didn't know that Parkinson's couldn't be seen on such a scan. I was asked to do various simple physical tasks and thought I'd done them all without trouble. I was not asked about my quality of life or anything about my personal situatiion, even though I mentioned I played an instrument and ran my own business. Even in a short private consultation, Dr Saifee could have taken a moment to make a personal connection with me. He could have come out from behind the desk and sat next to me. He could have talked about how fit and well I am and how positive that was for the outlook going forward. He could have explained the symptoms he saw that were listed - in medical terminology we had to look up - in the letter he sent following the appointment. (None of us can see two of these symptoms.) He could have discussed the various drugs he was prescribing, how they work and why he wanted me to take them even tho my tremor doesn't interfere with my daily life. When I asked how he knew if was Parkinson's, he said he'd seen thousands of these cases so he knew. That reply added nothing to the sum of my knowledge. A good doctor can recognise and treat a disease, a great doctor treats the patient.
