Dr Abrar Hussain is a Consultant specialising in General Psychiatry and Liaison Psychiatry (interface between psychological and physical health).
His areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, traumatic stress, personality disorders and psychosomatic disorders. He runs a specialist clinic in the NHS for functional neurological disorders.
He completed his medical training in 2003 in Chennai, India as a gold medallist and completed his postgraduate training in Psychiatry in London. He was awarded membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2009. He is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register.
Dr Hussain believes in a holistic approach using a combination of pharmacological and psychological interventions. He is Accredited in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), a type of collaborative therapy based on exploring relationship patterns. He is also an EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy is a powerful approach for traumatic memories.
Apart from his clinical work, he is a mentor for the Thames Valley and Wessex Leadership Academy. He is active in teaching and provides training to junior psychiatrists taking the Royal College of Psychiatrists examination as the Course Director for MRCPsych CASC course.
His research portfolio includes the national multi-centre CODES trial for dissociative seizures where he was a Principal Investigator. He presents both nationally and internationally at conferences and speaks at several regional and national events. He has also published scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
