Dr Amit Gera is a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich which is based in the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Alongside this, he is the lead clinician for upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancer and furthermore leads the viral hepatitis service.

Dr Gera qualified with distinction from Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine in 2000. Following his qualification, he undertook specialist training in gastroenterology with a particular focus in liver diseases. He later gained advanced training in viral hepatitis, hepatobiliary medicine, transplantation and critical care at the Liver Unit at King's College Hospital.

In 2010 he was awarded with an endoscopy fellowship by the British Society of Gastroenterology in order to train in advanced therapeutic endoscopy at The Medical University of South Carolina, USA. Since then, he has been the training programme director for the prestigious South Thames Gastroenterology training scheme and was responsible for running the regional gastroenterology teaching programme.
