Dr Amra Rao is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Organisational Consultant based at the Queen Anne Street Practice and the East London NHS Foundation Trust. She is the founding Director of Psychological Horizons - Therapeutic Services & Organisational Consultancy.
Dr Rao obtained her Doctorate and MA in Clinical Psychology from the University of Leeds. Alongside her private work, she has worked in the NHS for over 26 years. She was the Head of Complex Care Psychological Services in the NHS for over 17 years developing services committed to quality and choice of therapies. She has been extensively involved in delivering and developing evidence-based therapies and psychological services.
Besides her training in long-term interventions, she is also an experienced trainer, supervisor and practitioner in a range of evidence-based therapies including, Dynamic Interpersonal Psychotherapy (DIT), Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). She works with individuals, couples and families across the age groups with a particular focus on attention to individual needs, formulation, identity, barriers to change and social and cultural contexts. Her training in a range of therapeutic modalities underpins her approach to assessing suitability for a best fit psychological intervention in conversation with her clients.
Dr Rao is also an Organisational Consultant, coach and trainer, working with a range of managers and senior executives from different sectors. She is the Chair of the British Psychological Society's Leadership and Management Faculty and co-chairs a national initiative on wellbeing. Dr Rao is an associate of the Tavistock Psychological Therapies Development Unit, Tavistock & Portman Clinic & Anna Freud Centre. She has been a staff consultant on the postgraduate programme for organisational consultancy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust.
Besides her therapeutic practice, Dr Rao has been involved with teaching, supervision and consultancy projects at numerous Universities in UK and abroad and she has extensively published in leadership, wellbeing, consulting to teams and therapy evaluation.
