Dr Andrew Bates is a Consultant Endocrinologist & Diabetologist with over 20 years of experience. He is based at the University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust, and is clinical lead for endocrinology at the Heart of England foundation trust in Birmingham. He has a clinical interest in all of the main areas of main areas of Endocrinology and Diabetes.
Dr Bates qualified from Leeds University Medical School in 1987, with an additional degree in Chemical Pathology and a Distinction in Microbiology. His postgraduate experience and training was obtained in West Yorkshire and the Midlands. He obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1990 on his first attempt. Following this, he was awarded a Sheldon Research Fellowship, to fund three years of research, under the supervision of Professor RN Clayton. This research into the molecular genetics and epidemiology of pituitary tumours, culminated in the award of his MD thesis in 1997. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2003 and is a member of the Society for Endocrinology, European Society of Endocrinology, Endocrine Society (USA) and Diabetes (UK).
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Bates continues to publish in peer reviewed journals and attends national and international conferences regularly in order to maintain up to date and high standards of clinical care.
Patient feedback is central in ensuring high quality care. Following his last 360 deg appraisal, 25/26 patients were 'very satisfied' with their consultation. Comments such as ‘The doctor was excellent and always has been' ' A very competent doctor' ‘Prepared to listen and give his time' ‘Friendly and made me feel at ease, provide strong evidence of high quality care.
Feedback from colleagues is also very relevant. In the same 360 deg appraisal,15/15 colleagues rated him as good/outstanding for clinical assessment and 16/16 good/outstanding for patient management. Both scores were above the national/specialty average. Across the whole spectrum of clinical care, 80/80 responses were good/outstanding.
Outside of work he enjoys playing sport, cycling, gardening, listening to music and reading.
