Mr Hextall's practice covers all aspects of gynaecology. He has specialist clinics in Urogynaecology and treats a large number of women each year with prolapse, urinary incontinence and other bladder problems such as pain or recurrent cystitis.
As he is both a Gynaecologist and Urogynaecologist he can see women who have both gynaecological problems and bladder symptoms, which is really useful as often these can occur at the same time.
Mr Hextall also has a special interest in modern treatments for heavy periods and pelvic pain which can often be performed in a day case setting. He has expertise in the laparoscopic (key hole) treatment of endometriosis.
Andrew has undertaken research and written book chapters on the treatment of the menopause. Mr Hextall was awarded an MD for his work on ‘The effect of oestrogen and the menopause on the female lower urinary tract.' He is currently on the Editorial Board of the menopause journal Maturitas and reviews papers for another menopause journal called Climateric. He is very aware of how troublesome menopausal symptoms can be and is happy to help
Mr Hextall also specialises in vulval and vaginal skin problems having run a combined clinic in this area with a Consultant Dermatologist at St Albans City Hospital.
After going to Nottingham High School, Mr Hextall qualified from Birmingham Medical School in 1990. He was appointed as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust in 2002. He also see patients privately in Hertfordshire.
In addtion to his clinical work, Mr Hextall was Chairman of the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) Audit and Database Committee and Secretary of the Hertfordshire Medical Society. He has received many Clinical Excellence Awards plus he has lectured in the UK and abroad.
Andrew has been happily married since 2002 and has 3 children - the oldest of which is a junior doctor and the youngest a Physiotherapist. He likes to run and cycle, and when given the opportunity play golf!

Mr Hextall is very calm and knowledgable, he feels like a safe pair of hands. His explanation of the problem and the process of treatment was clear. He was attentive and available - he even took a call on a Sunday afternoon whilst away on holiday, which resulted in the swift treatment and resolution of a slight complication.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Hextall last year after he was recommended to me by a friend with regards to hormonal issues. I originally had issues with bleeding (after 18 months of nothing) and Dr Hextall suggested I tried Oestrogen patches for my HRT and to have the Mirena Coil fitted for the Progesterone imbalance. I still didn’t feel quite myself after 3 months (although the bleeding had stopped) so he suggested I try applying Testosterone Gel every other day as my levels were very low. I have now been following this HRT regime for 3 months and I can honestly say that I have not felt this good in a very long time and feel that Testosterone has really been the missing piece of the HRT jigsaw puzzle! I am so grateful to my friend for recommending Dr Hextall and feel very fortunate to have had such a successful outcome. Thank you Dr Hextall

He makes you feel very comfortable especially when it’s a sensitive area to deal with but explains exactly what he needs to do

I was referred to Mr Hextall after suffering with extremely heavy periods caused by fibroids for over 10 years. I had undergone various other less invasive surgeries, which were unsuccessful and in view of this and my age, Mr Hextall recommended a subtotal abdominal hysterectomy. Given the size of my uterus, which at one point was almost akin to a full term pregnancy, Mr Hextall was very honest and explained the complexity and risks of the surgery. I felt very well supported by him throughout the entire process. He listened well, answered all my questions thoroughly and gave me the space that I needed to finally come to a decision. Once that decision was made, he then ensured that I knew exactly what would happen and how I was likely to feel at various points, which meant that there were no surprises. During my stay in hospital and immediately afterwards, Mr Hextall was always available to answer any questions and give advice to the wider medical team. For a worrier like me, this was extremely comforting. I am now well on the road to recovery and have to say that I could not have been in safer hands.

Urinary incontinence (or peeing when you cough etc) is embarrassing, especially when you are not yet 80 years old. Andrew's approach is friendly, open, respectful which helped to remove the inhibitions associated with this sort of issue. He knew his preferred course of action, explained it so I understood (in my terms, Bulkamid is "nunny botox") and undertook the surgery personally. It went well and I am now no longer suffering from something I put up with for far too long. At the follow up he remembered me personally and clearly cares about his patients. Thank you.

I would highly recommend Mr Andrew Hextall to anyone struggling with pelvic pain and heavy periods. I felt genuinely listened to, supported and validated. The care I received leading up to, during, and after the laparoscopy made the world of difference.
