About

Mr Arjit Mitra is a Consultant Ophthalmologist, with special interests in vitreoretinal surgery and medical retina. He worked as a trainee at the BMEC (Birmingham and Midlands Eye Centre) from 2007 to 2011, before undertaking his fellowship in Manchester. During his time at BMEC, he won a number of rewards for his outstanding work, including the Roper-Hall Prize Medal and the Midlands Ophthalmological Society Travel Award.

Mr Mitra expresses his passion for being an eye doctor and quotes that he "loves the nature of his job. It is very challenging as the cases are usually very complex. However, whenever I help patients regain their vision, I find the job absolutely rewarding. It makes me feel that I have made such a positive difference in someone's life".

He was involved in helping set up the BMEC Alumni Association, which is a network that aims to connect all previous BMEC consultants. The association organizes annual events for the alumni. He has also published over 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has presented widely at national and international meetings. In addition to this, he has also co-authored a book on the history of BMEC.

He was the first Simulation Lead for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists from 2017-2021. He has an active interest in treaching and training, specially in promoting Simulation based training in Ophthalmology. He pioneered Simulation surgery in pig eyes, and his training videos are now used all over the world.

Mr Mitra currently resides in Harborne with his two daughters and his wife. He describes himself as family orientated and describes his parents as his heroes.
