Dr Huda, Consultant Endocrinologist, currently work in several units around London. He is a renowned expert in the diagnosis and management of diabetes. He has had extensive training at the prestigious diabetes centre in Kings College Hospital on all aspects of diabetes management including pumps, glucose sensor therapy, and antenatal diabetes. He is keenly interested in type 1, having considerable expertise in type 1 diabetes, insulin pump/ glucose sensors (hybrid closed-loop systems and real-time Continuous Glucose Monitoring/ Flash glucose monitoring), and MODY diabetes. He has also developed vast knowledge on managing women with gestational diabetes and omen with type 1, type 2, MODY diabetes during pre-conception, pregnancy and the post-partum period. He is available for consults for inpatient diabetes, diabetes foot problems, genetic forms of diabetes and type 2 diabetes/ insulin resistance.
Dr Huda was awarded his MB ChB in 1999 from the University of Liverpool. Following this, he continued his education with general and specialist endocrinological training in units across the UK, including at University Hospital Aintree in Liverpool, Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital, and King's College Hospital. He was appointed as a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2002 and undertook a research degree resulting in him being awarded a PhD for his work on the endocrinology of obesity and appetite from the University of Liverpool in 2010. Currently, he leads the Barts Health Genetic Diabetes clinic, where he gains day-to-day experience in assessing and managing atypical/MODY diabetes. Additionally, he leads a multi-disciplinary busy diabetes antenatal clinic, working closely with obstetricians, dieticians, and ophthalmologists to assist in good pregnancy outcomes for the mother and baby. He also heads up the North-East London Sustainability and Transformation Preconception workstream and works alongside fertility services within the NHS and private sectors, to assist mothers in maintaining optimal glucose control during and after assisted conception. He also represents North-East London on the London Diabetes Clinical Network groups for Type 1 diabetes, Inpatient Diabetes and Diabetes in Pregnancy and sits on an Expert Reference Group for the National Gestational Diabetes Audit. Previously, he has sat on NICE committees for the Diagnostic Assessments of insulin pump technology.
Dr Huda is an active member of the research community and actively engages in medical education. He has received significant support and funding for his research – in 2011 he received the NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer post in Diabetes and Endocrinology at King's College in London to pursue research into obstructive sleep apnoea and diabetes and he is currently applying for two £2 million grants for his research. He has an impressive publication history, published over thirty articles in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters. He has also recently co-authored the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists' guidelines on Alternative testing for Gestational diabetes during the Covid-19 pandemic. His excellent teaching has also been recognised by the scientific community as he was awarded a prestigious teaching qualification - the Certificate of Enhancing Academic Practice in Higher Education - from Kings College London. He also holds the positions of Honorary Senior Lecturer at Barts and the London Medical School, Queen Mary University of London, and a Visiting Senior Lecturer at King's College. Outside of research and teaching, he does medico-legal work for both defendant and claimant clients, covering all aspects of diabetes including diagnosis, foot ulcers, Charcot's foot, preconception/pregnancy and inpatient cases.
