About

Dr Dan McKenzie is a Consultant Cardiologist with a particular interest in complex angioplasty. He works full time at The Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust and also contributes to the 24/7 regional emergency heart attack and cardiac arrest service within the Bristol Heart Institute.

Dr McKenzie consults on a range of heart conditions; investigating patients with symptoms including chest pain, breathlessness, lightheadedness, palpitations and fainting and conditions such as high blood pressure or heart failure.

His sub-speciality is coronary intervention, using thin wires, balloons and stents to expand blocked or narrowed coronary arteries to improve blood flow to the heart muscle and relieve angina. He performed this procedure 487 times between 2016 and 2017, as opposed to the average of 248. Furthermore, 91% of his interventional procedures are performed through the blood vessel in the wrist (the radial artery) which has been proven to be the safest route. Moreover, he has an exceptional safety record and a lower complication rate of 1.4%, compared to the 2.6% predicted from the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society (BCIS).

Dr McKenzie strongly believes in providing the best quality care to his patients by taking into account the patient's needs and explaining everything as clearly as possible before ordering investigations or performing an angioplasty procedure.

Furthermore, he trains Junior Doctors and is involved in several Research Trials both nationally and internationally. He is on the National BCIS Council and was a longstanding member of the BCIS Training and Education Group.

Apart from his clinical work, he enjoys spending time with his family and is a keen sportsman: cycling, running, swimming and skiing and has run several full and half marathons. His goals this year are to complete an Olympic distance triathlon and a sub 4-hour marathon.

Dr McKenzie's secretary can also be contacted on 01225 838833 .
