About

Professor Jane Setterfield qualified in Medicine from University College London and in Dentistry from The Royal London Hospital. She trained as a Dermatologist at St John's Institute of Dermatology and is additionally a specialist in Oral Medicine. She has undertaken research at the University of Connecticut, USA and at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals.

Her current posts are Professor of Oral and Dermatological Medicine / Honorary Consultant in Dermatology, Departments of Oral Medicine & St John's Institute of Dermatology,Guy's & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London. She also holds an Honorary Consultant Dermatologist position at St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare Trust, London.

Professor Setterfield practices a wide range of general dermatology. In addition she leads the oral dermatology service at Guy's Hospital. Her clinical research interests include investigation of the pathogenesis of mucocutaneous diseases with a particular emphasis on the immunobullous disorders and lichen planus. With her team she has developed and published clinical outcome measures which are vital for optimising patient care, has identified biomarkers for disease severity and identifies the optimal treatments for complex mucocutaneous diseases.

Research Interests

Investigating the pathogenetic mechanisms and clinicopathological associations of the autoimmune blistering diseases pemphigus vulgaris and mucous membrane pemphigoid as well as the more common autoimmune disease lichen planus. As a clinical academic I also lead research developing disease specific clinical outcome measures so that treatment can be optimised. I collaborate nationally and internationally in these areas and am a member of the European Task Force for autoimmune blistering diseases responsible for developing European Guidelines.
