About

Dr Jude Oben is a Clinician Scientist and Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist. He holds a consultant appointment in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital, London. He was until recently a Consultant in Hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital, London. He remains an Associate Professor in Hepatology at University College London's Institute for Liver and Digestive Health. Dr Oben sees patients privately, including at The London Bridge Hospital.

Dr Oben has a PhD in immuno-pharmacology from UCL and studied medicine at Oxford, along with further study at Stanford University in the US as a research fellow in Immunology. His postgraduate medical training was at Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial College London - Cardiology and Internal Medicine), St Mary's Hospital London (Ophthalmology - Eye Surgery) and St Thomas' Hospital (Neurology and Critical Care). During specialist registrar training, he reoriented his research career with a two year post-doctoral Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA. His work there combined his previous interest in neuroscience with liver medicine and he discovered the autonomic nervous system regulates liver repair through actions on liver stem cells and liver stellate cells, in the context of obesity-irelated liver disease. Following his work at Johns Hopkins, Dr Oben was awarded a Wellcome Trust Fellowship on his return to London.

He currently leads a research group at UCL and practices clinical work and scientific research. His research work includes obesity related liver disease, liver regeneration and the mechanism of fibrosis in Crohn's disease. Dr Oben is also a co-founder of the Obesity Action Campaign and an invited member of the All Party Parliamentary Advisory Group on Childhood Obesity.

Outside of medicine and the lab, I play squash, tennis and chess (with my children) plus run.
