Dr Julene Carvalho is a Consultant Fetal & Paediatric cardiologist based at the Royal Brompton Hospital and St George's Hospital in London. Dr Carvalho qualified in Medicine in Brazil in 1981. She moved to the UK over 20 years ago to train as a Paediatric Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton.
Dr Carvalho takes a keen interest in fetal heart echocardiography in high-risk pregnancies and she is part of the team that runs the dedicated fetal clinic at the Royal Brompton. Further to this, she has developed an educational resource dedicated to the fetal heart and its appropriate imaging. Since 2001, She has helped lead an annual course on the 'Effective Prenatal Screening of Congenital Heart Disease'. Dr Carvalho also works closely with obstetricians and obstetric ultrasonographers in order to improve detection of congenital heart disease before birth.
Outside her clinic practice, Dr Carvalho has published in a number of research papers in peer-reviewed journals, she is a member of the editorial board of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and she is an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College and St George's Hospital Medical School in London. She is also a board member of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Chairperson of their Fetal Heart Interest Group. Dr Carvalho is passionate about teaching international doctors and she trains many fellows from abroad in paediatric and fetal cardiology.
