Professor Rustin trained in medicine at Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London, qualifying in 1976. He trained in dermatology at St Bartholomew's Hospital and at the Middlesex and University College Hospitals, London. He completed his MD thesis at the University of London in 1988 and was appointed consultant dermatologist at The Royal Free Hospital in 1989.  

He provides a caring and intensive investigation and treatment of a wide range of skin diseases in children and adults including atopic eczema, psoriasis, skin cancer and rarer skin conditions.

Professor Rustin has cultivated a clinical and research interest in atopic eczema working closely with Professor Len Poulter and more recently with Professor Arne Akbar in the Department of Immunology. Furthermore he has published over 190 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised 3 MD and 4 PhD theses to completion and is currently supervising 2 further PhDs and an MD.

He is currently Academic Vice-President of the British Association of Dermatologists and a Past President of the Section of Dermatology at the Royal Society of Medicine. He was also awarded a Personal Chair in University College London in 2011.
