Matthew is a Consultant Cardiologist (with a specialist interest in Advanced Heart Failure and Complex Pacing / Defibrillator implantation). He obtained his medical degree from the University of Leeds (2003) before completing his specialist training in Greater Manchester (accredited in Cardiology in addition to General Medicine). He then undertook a Post CCT-Fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure & Device Therapy at Wythenshawe Hospital before taking up his first Consultant post at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (where he was Heart Failure & Device Lead and transformed the service). He is now a Heart Failure & Device Consultant Cardiologist at Liverpool & Chest Hospital which is one of the busiest Device implanting centres in Europe. He has full Accreditation from the European Heart Rhythm Association and is also accredited with the British Society of Echocardiography.

Matthew has a strong academic background having completed a PhD at the University of Leeds. He obtained a 1st Class Honours BSc degree in Pharmacology as an undergraduate which stimulated an interest in biomedical research. Having obtained his MRCP at the earliest opportunity, he secured short-term funding through the British Heart Foundation (BHF)-Scholarship scheme to undertake preliminary work in the Division of Cardiovascular & Diabetes Research at the University of Leeds. He went on to secure a BHF-funded clinical research training fellowship during which time he undertook his proposed project investigating the influence of insulin-resistance on vascular regeneration alongside work looking at Heart Failure outcomes. He successfully completed his PhD in 2012. During his research period, he obtained over 15 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He presented his research at both national and international meetings and was a finalist for the ‘British Cardiovascular Society Young Researcher Award', ‘University of Leeds Post-Graduate Researcher Award', ‘Diabetes UK Young Researcher Award' and winner of the ‘British Atherosclerosis Young Investigator of the year Award'.

Matthew lives in Bowdon (Cheshire) with his wife and two much adored children. In his spare time he loves to travel and enjoys most sports.
