About

Clinical genetics consultant, Dr Paul Brennan works with the Northern Genetics Service at the International Centre for Life (Newcastle). He has been the Clinical Lead for Cardiac and Endocrine Genetics for the Northern Genetics Service for almost 20 years and was the Clinical Lead for Cancer Genetics from 2002 to 2020.

Dr Brennan's particular areas of expertise are cancer, cardiac and endocrine genetics. His interest in genetics first began as a medical student when the speciality of clinical genetics was relatively new. After a research degree looking at genes in the developing heart, Mr Brennan completed his medical training and went on to specialise in adult medicine and paediatrics before undertaking specialist training in Clinical Genetics. He implemented a new satellite clinical genetics department in Middlesbrough before becoming Clinical Director of the Northern Genetics Service where he managed a clinical and laboratory team providing genetics diagnostics for the North East of England and North Cumbria.

Dr Brennan has a particular interest in the use of new technology and novel clinical pathways to improve the diagnosis and management of rare inherited diseases. During his time as Clinical Programme Director for the North East & North Cumbria NHS Genomic Medicine Centre, he oversaw the introduction of whole genome sequencing into routine care as part of the 100,000 Genomes Project. Dr Brennan is currently involved in a number of research projects focusing on the improvement of diagnosis and treatment. He also delivers lectures to undergraduates and postgraduates and spends one week each year teaching genetics at Newcastle University in Malaysia.

Explanation

The whole family's concerns were addressed but at the centre was the patient and her concerns a truly exemplary consultation in every way. To take a case that had long been beyond the reach of NHS dogma; to deconstruct it and then elementally re-combine the components around a single evidence backed core explanation, was an absolute object lesson in how academic and free-thinking medicine can be conducted to the benefit of the patient, their family and support networks. This consultation was a masterclass in common sense practice triumphing over outdated concepts and barriers in thinking. We cant thank Dr Brennan enough for returning self belief and faith in herself back to our daughter.

Dr Brennan was a warm, knowledgable and efficient doctor. I felt that his expertise made the appointment smooth and educational. I would recommend him to anybody who is seeking clarity and diagnosis on their suspected EDS. He sent a detailed letter to myself, physio and GP after our appointment which was validating and helpful going forward to manage my symptoms. Thank you, Dr Brennan.

A real gentleman in every sense. I went to confirm a diagnosis of EDS that had been queried by other health professionals. He was easy to talk to with a gentle manner. He made me feel at ease straight away and listened carefully to what I had to say. He asked questions and examined me before giving a summary of his professional thoughts. He is clearly extremely knowledgeable in the field and has an excellent interaction with patients. I would highly recommend Dr Brennan
