About

Dr Brennan's interest in genetics started as a medical student in the 1980s when the medical speciality of clinical genetics was in its infancy. After a research degree studying genes in the developing heart, he completed his medical training and undertook postgraduate training in adult medicine and paediatrics before specialist training in Clinical Genetics.

Dr Brennan was appointed as an NHS Consultant in Clinical Genetics in 2002 with the Northern Genetics Service based in Newcastle upon Tyne. After opening a new satellite clinical genetics department in Middlesbrough, he was appointed to the role of Clinical Director of the Northern Genetics Service in 2008, managing a clinical and laboratory team providing genetics diagnostics for the population of North East England and North Cumbria.

Dr Brennan has been Clinical Lead for Cardiac and Endocrine Genetics for the Northern Genetics Service since 2003; he was Clinical Lead for Cancer Genetics for County Durham, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire from 2002 to 2018 and is now Clinical Lead for the whole North East region.

A particular interest is the use of new technology and novel clinical pathways to improve diagnosis and management for people living with rare inherited disease. Between 2014 and 2018 he was Clinical Programme Director for the North East & North Cumbria NHS Genomic Medicine Centre, overseeing the introduction of whole genome sequencing into routine care as part of the 100,000 Genomes Project. He is engaged in a number of collaborative research projects, all of which are focused on improving diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Brennan is a keen and popular teacher and lectures to a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate audiences in the UK and overseas. He teaches genetics for a week each year at Newcastle University's Medical School in Malaysia.

Dr Brennan put me at ease from the moment I walked through his door. He listened when I spoke, and was very thorough going through my past history. He examined me and confirmed a diagnosis of hEDS. I have been trying to get an answer for my myriad symptoms for over 27 years. I cannot tell you how incredible it is to finally have the answer and to know that there is someone in my corner now. He sent a very thorough report to me, just days after the consultation which had recommendations for my GP going forward. I cannot thank him or praise him enough.

Dr. Brennan has a lovely mild manner and dealt beautifully with my 7 yo daughter - quick to make her comfortable with some chat and jokes! He was extremely thorough and knowledgeable and diagnosed hEDS for my daughter and I in 1 appointment. He provided our diagnostic letters, which were some of the best clinician letters I've ever seen, in under 48 hrs. Time will tell what happens with trying to get local medics to accept this diagnosis but Dr. Brennan definitely knows his stuff and provides an excellent service.

My experience with Dr Brennan was fantastic. He was extremely welcoming, kind and gentle. He didn't judge and I felt as if I could discuss all my symptoms. In the past I have been dismissed as a hypochondriac when and I was very nervous before the appointment that it would happen again, but I shouldn't have worried. He explained all the issues weren't just in my head and was also really knowledgeable about different ways apart from the joints and ligaments, connective tissues disorders seem to manifest and gave advice on how to deal with the condition in my everyday life which I didn't know how to before.

We left with a much better understanding of the challenges facing our daughter. We felt comfortable asking many questions. All of which were answered patiently where possible. The session was greatly appreciated.

Dr. Brennan is a fantastic doctor and was amazing with our youngest as she normally will shy away from doctors, but Paul's manner and communication was excellent and he was able to complete his examination.

He is very knowledgable about connective tissue disorders, something that is very difficult to find. He takes a lot of time to go through all history with you and explain what it might indicate. I feel like he has taken my symptoms more seriously than most doctors I have seen for this the past 15 years.

Dr Paul Brennan is, in my experience and opinion, the best consultant I have had thus far. I felt at ease through what would have been a very stressful and difficult experience had it not been for Paul's clear advice and friendly and approachable manner. Paul communicated with me regularly and in a clear and concise way that avoided some of the quite confusing medical jargon I have experienced from other consultants in the past. I feel I have been supported throughout the process of genetic testing in a way which did not dismiss my worries and concerns about my family history of cancer, and I feel that all possible routes have been taken to finding out the information I needed. I would highly recommend Dr Brennan as a fantastic consultant.

Dr Paul Brennan was extremely welcoming and made us feel at ease. He was very thorough in his background questioning taking time to probe further where necessary. After a thorough examination he took time to explain the diagnosis and condition and treatments that may be available through NHS and the private sector. I would not hesitate to recommend him to others in the Scottish region as he was very good with both myself and my son.

I’ve been seeing the lovely Dr Brennan for the past 16 years. He has been a constant support to myself and my family. My condition has been very difficult throughout the years but Dr Brennan has never given up on me. He is such a lovely, genuine, gentle man with a wealth of knowledge. At the very beginning of my diagnosis, he was the only person that took me seriously enough to look into what was going on with me. I honestly believe that if it wasn’t for him, I might not be here now. I was walking around with a wrong diagnosis and a dilated aorta. I can safely say that my family and I owe so much to Paul. I just hope he never retires! I’d be lost without him!

I had a private consultation with Dr Paul Brennan. He was calm, considerate, and understanding. He took the time to consider the list of symptoms I gave to him prior the the consultation, to explore differential diagnoses, which I greatly appreciate. I was offered swift genetic testing and he informed me about what the results would mean, and possible treatments. Communication outside of the consultation has been great.
