Dr Samer Elsherbiny qualified from Sheffield in 1993. Before specializing in ophthalmology he trained in general surgery, general medicine, accident and emergency and neurology. Having trained in Glasgow and Leeds, he then joined the specialist registrar rotation in the West Midlands and in 2004 was appointed Consultant in the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, with a specialist interest in retinal diseases. Amongst his other roles, he is an examiner and skills instructor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is a clinical advisor to the Health Service Ombudsman.
Dr Samer Elsherbiny has co-authored numerous publications and has many areas of interest within ophthalmic practice, the most prominent of which is workforce development and education and training.
Of recent he was awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education from the University of Birmingham and is currently preparing for the Masters and continues to run a number of different national courses in ophthalmic imaging, laser and intravitreal therapies.
After holding a number of administrative roles within BMEC, he has spent more time recently as examiner and surgical skills instructor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
