Dr Sami Hoque is a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist with Barts Health NHS Trust at Whipps Cross University Hospital and Senior lecturer at Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London. He also engages in some private practice working with the Holly House Private Hospital. and Spire Roding Hospital, Redbridge
.Dr Hoque was a ‘World Bank Graduate Scholar’ studying at Edinburgh University. He received his PhD on the role of gut bacteria in the mechanism of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease) in 2000. He was awarded many prizes during his studies, initially for the ‘Best research student’ by the Council of the Vice-Chancellors and Principals of the UK Universities. Then, in 1999, he was awarded the prize for the best research paper in Annual Meeting from the American College of Gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association and Royal College of Physicians of UK.
Before taking up his current post, he was a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Physician at the prestigious University College London Hospitals (UCLH). In Summer 2011, he spent his sabbatical as a ‘Visiting Professor’ in the Crohn’s Unit at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York.
Dr Hoque is the lead physician in Digestive Disease and Nutrition at Whipps Cross University Hospital and Principal Investigator for Basic Science and Clinical Research, currently running several novel therapeutic drug trials investigating possible treatments for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. He has published at least 45 articles in a peer reviewed journals including book chapter. Dr Hoque is an Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Medical Adviser for the National Crohn’s & Colitis UK, East London Group.
Dr Hoque is a highly experienced and advanced level Endoscopist (Endoscopic Ultrasound and Laser therapy) as well as a colonoscopy trainer. He also performs endoscopic weight reduction procedures.
His extensive training, high level of achievement, and plethora of experience have resulted in Dr Hoque becoming an excellent gastroenterologist practicing at the forefront of his field.
