Dr Sharmishtha Sarkar is a Consultant Paediatrician holding a substantive post at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust at Lister Hospital, Stevenage and New QEII Hospital,Welwyn Garden City where she has been based at for the last 6 years.She specialises in Community (Neuro-developmental)Paediatrics.She specialises in assessing, diagnosing and managing children with complex Neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism,ADHD,Developmental Delay;Neurological conditions such as Epilepsy,Cerebral Palsy;genetic conditions affecting neurodevelopment-eg.Down Syndrome.She also deals with general paediatric problems -eg.constipation,respiratory difficulties, failure to thrive, reflux disease,common neonatal problems, obesity,headache,sleep difficulties in neurodisabled children, most common childhood illnesses.
In 2001 she went on to undertake her specialist training in Paediatrics in the UK and gained her membership from Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2005.
Since 2007 Dr Sarkar has undertaken comprehensive training in General Paediatrics and Higher specialist training in community (neuro-developmental) paediatrics with a special interest in Neurodisability - Autism ,ADHD and Epilepsy. She gained much experience from working in premier institute Great Ormond Street Hospital and other hospitals in north London.
Dr Sarkar is also the Designated Medical Officer for Special Educational Needs in her employing NHS Trust and helps provide medical advise to external agencies such as Local Educational Authority,other Health Agencies for children with special needs.Dr Sarkar is passionate about advocating on behalf of children with external agencies such as schools etc. to enable children with special needs have a smoother journey in their school environment.
Her research Interests are Epilepsy,Autism,other neurodisability and neurological conditions.Dr Sarkar was part of the Paediatric Stroke Guideline development Group,RCPCH,that published Paediatric Stroke guidelines in May 2017.
