Smruta Shanbhag is fully accredited and registered Gynaecological and Gyn Oncology surgeon . She qualified from Goa University in 1995. In 1998, undertook a post-graduation qualification in Gynaecology. At this time she wrote her thesis in Ultrasound study of pelvic masses. She commenced her training in Aberdeen, Scotland where she trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She completed it at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where she successfully gained the Certificate of specialist training in Gynaecology and sub-specialist training in Gynaecological Oncology. Smruta (also called Ruth) has worked as a Consultant Gynaecologist and gynaecological Oncologist in Glasgow for nine years and now works in the West Midlands.

Smruta works as Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncology Surgeon at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire and HCA Harborne in Birmingham. At present, Smruta is the only consultant providing gynaecological Oncology service in the private sector in Coventry and Warwickshire. She has a keen interest in key hole surgery- laparoscopic and robotic.

Smruta is also involved in GMC exams and Royal College exams as well as teaching and examinations at Warwick medical school. She has several relevant publications in gynaecological oncology.

Smruta offers individualised one-stop service to women with menstrual abnormalities, postmenopausal bleeding, elevated CA125, menopause, HRT, abnormal smears, colposcopy, vulval abnormalities, pelvic masses, risk-reducing surgery for BRCA, ovarian cancer screening and gynaecological cancers of vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tube and ovary after Multidisciplinary consultation as recommended by DoH cancer services guidelines.

Smruta believes in providing a comprehensive evidence-based and holistic service from the diagnosis to treatment, whether it be conservative or surgical. Patients describe her as kind, compassionate, friendly, professional and knowledgeable. She can communicate in British Sign language with deaf patients and family members.

Smruta has a special interest in Laparoscopic surgery for most benign and malignant gynaecological disorders that warrant surgery.

Smruta consults at HCA Harborne on Mondays, and other days by arrangement. She aims, where possible, to provide a one-stop service so that women get a consultation, investigations and a management plan in the same appointment.
