Dr. Emer McGilloway graduated with a degree in Medicine from Queen's University Belfast, where she worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast. She then went on to work as a Neurology registrar at Beaumont, St Vincent's, and St James's hospitals in Dublin before moving to London to train in Rehabilitation Medicine at King's College Hospital, the Royal National Hospital for Neuro-disability and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore.

She joined the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court in 2010 as a Lead Consultant for neuro-rehabilitation and subject matter expert for the Ministry of Defence. In 2015, she was appointed Clinical Lead for neurological and trauma rehabilitation at King's College Hospital where she led a successful bid for additional inpatient neurorehabilitation beds in SouthEast London - effectively doubling the current provision.

Dr. McGilloway is also a London-based representative for the National Clinical Reference Group for Disability and Rehabilitation, as well as chairing the National clinical pathway development group for spinal injury. Recently, she was appointed as a Topic Adviser to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) with respect to the national guideline for rehabilitation in cases of chronic neurological disorders.

She is a consultant adviser to the Rugby Football Union Injured Players Foundation, with a special interest in traumatic brain injury. Her interests beyond medicine include opera and theatre. She is an alumna of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio, and she was a professional opera singer for several years working as a soloist with Opera North, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera and Glyndebourne.
