Matthew Murray-Downing has extensive physio experience - from high-pressure NHS roles to the world of international sport currently in F1 and Olympic gymnastic team - he is passionate about applying these principles to the full spectrum of physiotherapy goals patients he treats may have. He works between private practices in London and Chelmsford as well as consulting to Redbull Formula 2, and British Gymnastics.
Having obtained a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy at the University of East Anglia, he began his career in a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapy role, treating NHS patients in Suffolk, and went on to gain experience in a range of hospital and community settings before moving onto private practice and international sport.
He has a wealth of clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions as well as a broad spectrum of injuries - from common lower back pain to pre/post operatively orthopaedic injuries. He is also trained in sports massage, kinesis-taping and shockwave therapy. More recently he has completed further education to become a strength and conditioning coach to add to his performance coaching role.
Applying clinical expertise to a passion for sport, Mr Murray-Downing has also secured roles treating elite sports professionals. Currently, he is working in Formula 2 as Performance Coach to a Red Bull Junior Driver, which involves international travel and the application of specialist knowledge to a high-pressure environment. Furthermore, he also manages some of Team GB's gymnastics team and is currently in preparation for the Paris Olympics and previously worked with Norwich City Football Club and the Oxford Boating Team. Working in high-performance sport has allowed him to develop a range of treatment modalities - including manual therapy, strength and conditioning, and performance coaching - which he brings to bat at Chelmsford Physio, supporting patients with their return to higher levels of function and rehabilitation goals.
Beyond the world of physio, Mr Murray-Downing is a keen rugby and squash player and cyclist. Having competed for Essex County Squash and toured the UK circuit, he understands the demand of high-level sport and the frustration of injury.

I have been seeing Matt for about 18 months now, following a hip replacement. He has been great at helping me work on my balance and regaining strength in my legs. Matt really thinks about the needs of his clients, sets realistic goals and is both encouraging and reassuring.

I had an exceptional experience at Chelmsford Physio with Matt. The professionalism and expertise demonstrated by Matt is outstanding. Matt's approach to resolving my tendon issue in my elbow with shockwave treatment was highly effective. Not only did I feel well taken care of, but the results of my treatment are really helping me. I highly recommend Chelmsford Physio for anyone seeking top-notch physiotherapy care.

The treatment received has been a wholly positive experience. From initial diagnosis, through progressive exercise and management has been excellent and I would have no hesitation in recommending Mathew to any potential patient, from novice, social through to professional sports person. A 5 star service.

After seeing Mr Matthew Murray-Downing I can only speak extremely highly of the treatment, diagnosis and explanation received with my physio session. After being treated in two other physiotherapy sessions I was not convinced with the diagnostic and understanding of the ongoing shoulder and tricep issues. Matt conducted multiple tests and analysis of this area and ended up writing a referral to my GP, I’m looking forward to now getting this sorted and will be returning to Matt with future physio issues.

Matt was really great the whole way through my rehabilitation process. He explained everything to me and was adaptable with his programmes to the changes of my body. I am happy to hoghly recommend him!
4.5
Matthew is an excellent physio. I have had experience with many in the past, and none have been as friendly, knowledgable and professional as Matthew. I have made great progress in my recovery from a micro discectomy at the L5-S1 level that I had done in July 2023. I was experiencing quite persistent nerve pain, with a major flare up occurring roughly ever 6 weeks. Matt not only provided strength and conditioning advice and routines but also helped ease my nerve pain and provide other avenues to explore, should the pain continue. Matt helped piece together an effective stretching routine, a lower back strengthening routine, and a weekly physical activity plan. His attention to the psychological elements of such a recovery was also extremely helpful. He has helped in giving me confidence to move in certain ways, which has had a massively positive impact on my ability to train and recover. Matt also provides a holistic view of your health and does not only focus on your injury. We have had many conversations about other methods of reducing pain, through diet, cardio, supplements and ice baths. I would recommend Matt to anyone who requires guidance during a tough recovery.

Matt is very knowledgeable and incredibly thorough. He has treated a number of family members successfully, and in cases where a specialist referral has been required, he has been very robust in his research and diligent in seeing the process through to a suitable conclusion.

Genuine and caring, takes time to understand full picture of what’s going on, listens and gives practical advice. Saw Matt after unsuccessful treatment elsewhere and wish I’d have seen him sooner as he helped to cure my ongoing back issue quickly, also willingly wrote to my GP to make sure I got relevant medication which helped no end. Was super supportive when going through NHS and Bupa process. Couldn’t recommend Matt highly enough!
