About

Professor Sadaf Ghaem-Maghami, Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncologist, currently works within the Imperial College NHS Trust. She is highly experienced in colposcopy, especially abnormal smears and precancerous cervical disease, and cancer of any part of the female reproductive system (uterine, cervical, endometrial, vulval, fallopian tube, and ovary).

Professor Ghaem-Maghami began her medical education at the London Hospital Medical School, graduating in 1990. She then went on to do her specialist gynaecological training in London, resulting in her being awarded her MRCOG in 1998. She was later awarded her additional training certificate in gynaecological oncology from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. During her training she undertook a research degree examining the immunology of the female genital tract, resulting in her being awarded a PhD by the University of London for her work. She has worked in her current NHS post since 2006, in that time she has also been made Professor and a Principle Investigator in Gynaecological oncology at Imperial College London.

Professor Ghaem-Maghami remains an active researcher focusing on surgical technologies in ovarian surgery, surgery for ovarian cancer, ovarian cyst diagnosis, and novel markers and treatment of abnormal cervical smears. Her research has resulted in the publication of numerous peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals like the BMJ and the Lancet. She has also edited textbooks and written chapters for leading textbooks in the field. Additionally, she is currently the Chair of the Tumour Panel in the West London Gynaecological Cancer Centre and Director of Subspecialty Training in Gynaecological Oncology.

Explanation

I am SO happy that I found Professor Ghaem-Maghami. She turned what seemed to be a very intimidating diagnosis into a quite smooth (under the circumstances!) experience from start to finish. She treated me like an individual, not just another patient on a long list. Everything was explained in a calm and reassuring way. I had to have a radical hysterectomy and I was worried that the surgery would fundamentally change my life, but in fact I'm 3 weeks into recovery and pretty much back to normal! She did everything she could to keep the surgery keyhole as apposed to an abdominal cut, which was an integral part of my quick recovery. I was kept informed throughout by Professor Maghami and her lovely colleague Sue by phone & email - and in person post surgery. All of my concerns and worries were addressed. I spent a lot of time researching who to have my treatment with. Ideally I wanted a woman, who I feel can understand the concerns I had about treatment and recovery in a way that a male practitioner simply couldn't. I had consultation with a surgeon who told me I was being ridiculous for feeling stressed about not being able to continue taking hormone therapy post surgery (It turns out I CAN continue hormone therapy) but Prof Maghami took a more measured approach to this aspect of my treatment, which calmed me down significantly. If you are looking for someone for treatment, please don't hesitate to have a consultation with Prof Maghami.
