Stephen McDonnell is an Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge and a Consultant Knee and Hip Surgeon working at Addenbrookes Hospital. He undertook his research MD and orthopaedic surgical training in Oxford, based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. He has a specialist knee and hip "Sports and Joints" fellowship in Melbourne with the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group. He gained an extensive experience in patients with sports injuries and arthritis. He believes that each patient should be prescribed a personalised package of care and treatment program.
I have a special interest and undertake the majority his knee replacements, partial unicompartmental knee replacements (sometimes called knee resurfacing) only replacing the damaged area of the knee, which have lower risks from surgery and can provide a superior functional outcome for patients.
He has a keen interest in sport and has been the match orthopaedic surgeon for first-class rugby internationals, and is a regular motorsports doctor at Silverstone for the Formula One British Grand Prix.
He is heavily involved in research, education, and lectures locally, nationally and internationally. He has developed the undergraduate orthopaedic curriculum, inspiring orthopaedic medical students to be orthopaedic surgeons of the future.

My experience is as an observer, being involved with every consultation attended with my wife. As a result of careful assessment and thoughtful communication. Surgery was then carried out successfully. I can confidently highly recommend to anyone seeking a consultantation.

I came to see Professor Stephen as a second opinion, having been told because of my age, I could not expect to ski again and do many of the other physical activities are so love. Professor Stephen saw this as a nonsense approach and was absolutely professional in assessing, treating, Operating and my rehabilitation to the point of my discharge today. I am absolutely over the moon with Professor Stephen and would recommend him to anybody.

Having experienced chronic pain for a number of years, it was extremely reassuring to see Professor McDonnell and really feel listened to. From my OA diagnosis through to my hip replacement, 18 months later and all through my recovery he always gave me time to explain my concerns and he provided me with all my options and choices. My surgery was very successful and I’m so pleased I had it done as it has given me my life back (with huge improvement in my back pain too).

Friendly and reassuring at all times. Did not try and influence timing and decision making just provided facts and information. I felt I was in good hands during the operation due to his technical skills and also his bedside manner.

I felt nervous about my procedure and what the outcome might be, however I needn’t have worried. Stephen McDonnell was calm, kind, explained everything clearly and I felt well looked after throughout. He made me feel confident, the results have been given me back my mobility and I can’t recommend him highly enough.

Stephen McDonnell was recommended by a friend who said he was the best. I had the best experience I could have had for my very first surgery. Recovery very good and very little scaring. Would highly recommend

Excellent colleague
Mr Arman Memarzadeh
Stephen is always looking to deliver patient specific care and listens to the needs of his patients. Stephen is an outstanding surgeon and achieves the best outcomes for his patients. I would not hesitate to recommend him to treat my family.
Mr Michael Barrett
Stephen is in my opinion one of the foremost knee surgeons in the UK and is one of the few people I call for advice and as a sounding board. He is charming, experienced, knowledgeable and kind. I have seen some patients that he has operated on (they have moved to London for various reasons), the surgery has been technically flawless and the patients have all been delighted with his diagnostic and interpersonal skills. I would let him treat me or a family member without hesitation and, as a surgeon, that is the highest compliment I can pay him.
Dr Kash Akhtar
Stephen is a colleague and co-founder of OSSA, which aims to provide world-class orthopaedic care in Cambridge. His main expertise is in knee surgery, both ACL and keyhole procedures in younger patients, and joint replacement for those with arthritis where joint-preservation will not help. Stephen also works in Orthopaedic research at the University of Cambridge, as part of the team investigating the role of stem cells into treating osteoarthritis.
