Orthopaedic Surgeon
Hull, HU10 7AZ
Mr Tom Symes is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in Hip & Knee Surgery at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital.
He leads the Orthopaedic Department at the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Hull York Medical School. He is the revision Hip lead for East Yorkshire.
Mr Symes has a particular interest in day case joint replacement and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). Through the implementation of cutting-edge anaesthetic techniques, he ensures patients receive optimal pain control and can mobilise quickly and safely post-surgery. This approach results in a lower rate of post-operative issues and enables patients to be discharged home usually on the day of surgery or the day after.
He has also refined a muscle sparing hip replacement technique (SPAIRE technique) that allows patients to return to full activities after hip replacement with no restrictions.
Mr Symes completed his medical degree at the University of Leeds in 1999, followed by his specialised training in hip and knee replacement at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow, where he acquired expertise in performing navigated (computer aided) knee replacements. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2003 and later completed his Master’s degree in Evidence Based Orthopaedics at the University of Teesside in 2006. In 2010, he became a Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
At Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital, he provides treatments for hip and knee injuries and hip and knee arthritis. He has expertise in arthroplasty, knee arthroscopy, hip replacement, knee replacement, partial knee replacement and hip & knee injections.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Symes has published several papers and made significant contributions to two best-selling orthopaedic textbooks. He has shared his expertise at national meetings, delivering lectures on enhanced recovery and its impact on patient outcomes.

I choose Mr Symes to do my hip replacement as he said that he doesn’t believe in cutting into too much muscle therefore it is a quicker recovery and afterwards you can get back to fitness sooner. As I do a lot of exercise this suited me.

Mr Tom Sykes came across as academically precise in his treatment of me at a recent consultation. His literature he gave me was also the same. What he did lack for me was the warmth of a Consultant/Patient relationship. I have been treated at Castle Hill for Cancer since January 2020 and my treatment there far exceeded that of my recent consultation with Tom Symes

Mr Symes conveyed a confidence in me that I was in the hands of an expert. His approach was friendly and empathetic, always ready to answer questions and provide explanations. He pre-emptied many of my questions and enabled me to feel less anxious towards the operation.

From the initial consultation the whole procedure was explained clearly by Mr Symes. I fully understood the procedure and after the anticipation and anxiety prior to the operation I was happy and comfortable for the operation to go ahead. The results where fantastic, less pain than I expected initially from the operation and after 4 weeks was walking without sticks, totally unaided and without hip pain, thank you so much.

A most agreeable person, explained every thing in clear terms, showed concern about my hip joint. He and his team are a wonder. Follow up after surgery was very good, with referral to physio dept.

I was very pleased with Mr Symes approach to my surgery. He made sure I understood everything that would happen and why. After the surgery he was attentive to my recovery needs and my understanding of the process of recovery moving forward. It was nice to find a consultant with a really good bedside manner.
