I am a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon who qualified in 2001 from Newcastle Medical School with Distinction. I have completed the majority of my surgical training in the North-East but I have also trained for 12 months in Adelaide, Australia and completed a 12 month nationally appointed TIG Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship in Sheffield in 2011-12. I am a full-time NHS consultant at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne commencing in September 2013. I have been the Head of Department since October 2020. I currently treat in excess of 175 breast cancers per year (UK average ~ 100-110/year). The RVI breast unit is the largest breast screening and training unit in the North East. I am one of the appointed trainers for regional trainees and national fellows, and the Course Director for the National Oncoplastic Fellowship (TIG) workshop held in Newcastle each year. I play an active role in clinical research as Primary Investigator (PI) for nationally funded (NIHR) clinical trials. I teach at both regional and national courses and I am an Assigned Educational Supervisor to trainees at all levels. I give invited lectures to local GP's to help improve patient care in primary care.
I strive to deliver excellent patient care and the highest levels of patient satisfaction possible. I have provided some of my patient feedback to demonstrate this.
My specialist interests are the management of patients with breast cancer and aesthetic breast surgery. This includes partial and full breast reconstruction (immediate and delayed). I frequently perform procedures to improve breast symmetry including breast reduction, mastopexy (uplift), breast augmentation, nipple reconstruction and lipomodelling as part of my routine NHS practice. I also perform these procedures privately for patients who want to improve their body image and quality of life.

Mr Critchley’s approach combined a perfect balance of warmth and respectfulness. I felt totally listened to and understood when explaining my concerns. His treatment was thorough and thoughtful and he offered helpful choices. By the end of the appointment I had total peace of mind. After the appointment I had the best clinic letter I have ever received, summarising everything fully and accurately and demonstrating a style of approach which I wish all doctors would adopt. This was a priceless appointment for my heath and future peace of mind and I am ever grateful!
