About

Mr Alan Norrish is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Cambridge, United Kingdom. He qualified in Medicine and was also awarded a PhD for his research from the University of Cambridge.

He has a specialist interest in the treatment of injuries and disorders of the hip, knee and ankle. He is highly skilled in complex primary and revision joint replacement surgeries of the hip and knee, including minimally invasive joint replacement surgery. He offers hip replacement via the 'Direct Anterior Approach' allowing rapid recovery and early discharge.  He also offers customised knee replacement, allowing an implant to be specifically made for a patient, to get a 'hand in glove' fit.

Mr Norrish works as the Team Doctor for Cambridge Rugby Club and has extensive experience in treating sports injuries on and off the pitch.  He specialises in sports knee surgery including meniscal repair, cruciate (ACL) repair and knee surgery to stabilise the patella after dislocation.  He uses 'Platelet Rich Plasma' injections to help damaged tendons to heal.

Mr Norish is also experienced in treating fractures in the legs, hip, knee and ankle including complex fractures that require plates, screws or circular (Taylor Spatial) frames and also in the assessment of fractures that are not healing (non-unions). He implements a number of novel techniques such as ultrasound treatment, platelet rich plasma therapy and magnetic limb lengthening devices.  He also offers custom titanium printed bone replacements after complex trauma or infection.

From my very first meeting with Mr Norrish, I found him an excellent and sensitive listener. He was very willing to treat me as an individual and work with me and my particular situation. Before carrying out surgery to replace my arthritic hip, Mr Norrish first explored other options with me, with the hope of delaying surgery for as long as possible - this included shock absorbing insoles and injections. These were helpful for a few months and enabled me to enjoy my son's wedding, without pain. I appreciated this very much. Once it became clear that the pain had returned and that surgery would be needed, Mr Norrish explained what would happen, during surgery and during the recovery period, in a very clear and very understandable way, allaying any fears I might have. I knew I was in good hands and had great confidence in his skills as a surgeon. So it has proved. 18 months on, the surgery has proved hugely successful. I am free of pain, have excellent mobility and am able to renew my delight in hill walking, sailing and gardening, which give me such pleasure and relaxation. Life is back to normal. I am so very, very, grateful to Mr Norrish for his care and skill. A huge thank you.

Mr Norrish is a kind and efficient doctor. He has looked after me as an NHS and a private patient. Over a number of years, through a knee replacement and ligament reconstruction, I have always felt informed, able to ask questions and well listened to. He has seen me as soon as possible in emergencies and with regular, day-to-day care. I would certainly recommend him to family and friends.

A first class consultant and surgeon. A very kind and sympathetic manner and a good listener. Mr. Norrish explained exactly what to expect from knee replacement surgery and how to achieve the best outcome. He has done an excellent job.
