Mr Alistair Stirling is a highly experienced consultant spinal surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH), where he has been based since 1990. He sees patients privately at the Edgbaston Hospital and the Priory Hospital. Mr Stirling treats and manages all thoracic and low back spinal conditions including sciatica, spinal stenosis, spinal tumours, low back pain, and spondylosis. Although no longer performing operative surgery due to arthritis, he is able to advise patients, refer onwards for surgery, and provide a second opinion on potential surgeries. Mr Stirling also continues to offer image-guided injection therapies.
Mr Stirling gained his medical qualification in 1977 from the University of Birmingham before becoming an MRC research fellow at the University of Leeds. He also pursued a surgical fellowship in Sydney, Australia.
During his time at ROH, Mr Stirling has made a huge difference to clinical practice including the introduction of reconstructive techniques for spinal tumour, trauma, infection, and degenerative disease. He also introduced microsurgical spinal discectomy and decompressive techniques. In 2012, Mr Stirling was awarded an NHS National Silver Clinical Excellence Award for his contributions. He has also been awarded honorary life membership of the Society for Back Pain Research, the National Back Pain Clinical Network, and the British Orthopaedic Association.
