Mr Aman Coonar is an experienced consultant thoracic surgeon with a very patient centred approach. "I love getting to know my patients, understanding their problems and giving them the best care I can".
He is the National Lead for Thoracic Surgery for the NHS. He was elected as President of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery for 2025-7 (www.scts.org). He has previously been President of the Royal Society of Medicine cardiothoracic section.

He is the senior practicing thoracic surgeon at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge which is rated by the CQC as Outstanding (check CQC hospital ratings at https://www.cqc.org.uk/care-services/find-hospital).
As clinical lead, he led the unit to both some of the best lung cancer survival outcomes after surgery as well as best patient experience.
He is the co-author of the popular textbook, "Thoracic Surgery Techniques", the chapters of which had 1000s of downloads.
He sees NHS patients in Cambridge, and private patients in Cambridge, London, overseas and on-line. He is involved in charitable work in India and elsewhere.
He is active in research and service/quality improvement. He leads the MERITS study which is the largest study worldwide of renal impairment after thoracic surgery. He has overseen the national lung volume reduction and pectus programmes.

He is very kind and has done a good job my operation he apologised for making a big cut but I don’t mind.
