About

Mr Amar Alwitry is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in cataract, glaucoma and lid surgery. He was awarded 'Best Ophthalmologist 2019 and Patient Safety Innovator of the Year' by GHP Private Healthcare Awards 2019.

He is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon who has written three ophthalmology text books and published more than 35 pieces in the world literature. He has a Masters in Medical Law and undertakes much medicolegal work. He has been a specialist advisor to the CQC on Never Events and has recently been appointed as Safety and Learning Special Advisor to NHS Resolutions tasked with developing a National Programme of Learning from Litigation across all Medical Specialities. He is currently working with the GMC, NHSI, and the BMA to facilitate this.
He regularly gives talks to GPs and Optometrists.

Rather than just undertake private cataract and lens-based procedures as a Generalist he sought further specialist training and obtained Post Graduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive surgery focussing on bespoke patient centred cataract surgery and the use of premium intraocular lenses. He undertakes more than 1800 cataract procedures in a year, more than any other surgeon in the Midlands. He has also published two fiction novels - Emergence and Coercion.

He is also a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Quality and Safety Group.

He is a local surgeon working in Nottingham and Leicestershire so is always available to care for any problems that may occur.

I would like you to pass on my most sincere thanks to Mr Alwitry. As someone is almost deaf, my father finds communication with people extremely difficult and in particular with people he has never met before. Mr Alwitry made him feel valued. He listened to him, reassured him, sat close to my father, spoke loudly and separated his words clearly in order for my father to understand him. He also made it very clear that he wanted my father to understand what the exact problem was with his eyes and frequently invited my father to ask questions. My father was very impressed.

I would express my thanks to you for the care and consideration you showed me yesterday when I turned up for treatment to my eyes. I have had much treatment on my eyes and I felt as I left your rooms yesterday that this was the first occasion on which I had my problems and the outcome fully explained to me.

Dear Mr Alwitry, I was overwhelmed on the day after my operation when I could see without my glasses; particularly the trees and the sky. For 59 years the first thing on waking has been to grope for my specs to begin the day. No more! It amazes me each day to be “normal” and no more steamed up specs either. Thanks to your skill and your jolly support I am very happy.
