David Cranston is Associate Professor of Surgery in the the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences in the University of Oxford and a Consultant Urological Surgeon in Oxford University Hospitals Trust. He qualified from Bristol University in 1975 and worked in Exeter and Bath before moving to Oxford .
Mr. Cranston has a special interest is in renal surgery and was awarded his D.Phil in 1986 for kidney transplantation based research. Since 2001, he has been clinical director of the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Unit in Oxford which, with colleagues in the UK and China, is researching into a novel way of treating cancer without surgery. Recently his group became the national referral centre for treating complex kidney tumours avoiding the need for some patients to go onto dialysis.
In addition to his practice and excellence in research, Mr. Cranston has co supervised 20 research fellows for higher degrees. He was elected a governing body Fellow of Green Templeton College in 2006, and in 2007 he was involved with a colleague in founding the UCare charity to raise money for urological research and education. He is an author on over 100 peer reviewed publications and 18 book chapters, and recently published two books; John Radcliffe and his Legacy to Oxford for the 300th anniversary of the death of John Radcliffe, one of Oxford's greatest benefcators, and ‘On Eagle's Wings: Models in Mentoring'. He was the first recipient of the Golden Cystoscope award in 2001 for a consultant within 10 years of appointment who has made a significant contribution to British urology.
