In August 2023 I had vitreoretinal surgery at Manchester Eye Hospital. This is a review of my experience and my surgeon Mr Felipe Scala. My local optician discovered I had vitreomacular traction with a possible macular hole. This was found during an eye scan. My optician recommended early intervention to deal with this in order to achieve the best outcome. I was offered various hospitals under the NHS choose and book system none of which offered the hospital I was seeking. Having worked as a qualified nurse for the NHS for over thirty years I had a fair amount of knowledge regarding various hospitals. I knew Manchester Eye Hospital was a centre of excellence and I did not want to consider the other hospitals on offer. I have also been on the “other side of the fence” and I have witnessed care given to family, friends and myself with various other NHS providers. Most of the care has been excellent but there has been some very worrying care over the years. Hence my decision to have my operation by Mr Scala at the world renowned Manchester Eye Hospital. I should add that even though the hospital was outside my local area they do take NHS patients but it can be a battle to go down the NHS route. I would say don’t give up! I actually paid for my operation because I wanted it to be dealt with early and to get it over with. I chose Mr Felipe Dhawahir-Scala after doing a fair amount of research. His qualifications and responsilities are impressive. He is a genuinely aproachable person.Always cheerful, understanding and reassuring. I felt in safe hands and had every confidence in him. To anyone having this type of surgery I would also say do a bit of research into the recovery period in particular. It can be daunting but being prepared certainly helps to achieve the best and most successful outcome. Follow the advice regarding installation of the numerous eye drops. This can feel a bit overwhelming at times but once in a routine it becomes much easier. Hand washing, avoiding bending and lifting all play an important part in the recovery. There is also a huge amount of information on the web regarding post operative “posturing”. This is potentially a significant challenge! For me Mr Scala’s approach to this subject was something that set him apart from others. He has researched and challenged the issue of “posturing” and it makes interesting reading. As a result many of Mr Scala’s patients need only posture for a few hours or days. The benefits of this are huge especially for older patients. The evidence is compelling and I for one benefited greatly from this forward thinking surgeon. In conclusion I would not hesitate to recommend Mr Felipe Eduardo Dhawahir-Scala be it down the private route or NHS. A special thank you to Helen, Mr Scala’s secretary for her help in dealing with my requests and questions so efficiently.

From my first consultation with Mr Scala I was impressed by his knowledge, expert advice and professionalism, inspiring complete confidence. Everything about my operation was explained in detail and very clearly so that I knew what to expect at every stage of the procedure. Mr Scala has a wonderful reassuring manner, making me feel relaxed and putting me at ease at all times. After my operation, Mr Scala contacted me the next morning to check on my progress and he is always easily contactable if you need advice: nothing is ever too much trouble. I am so grateful to Mr Scala for the successful outcome of my surgery and have great pleasure in recommending him and his team.

I was distraught at the prospect of losing sight in my left eye and also extremely nervous. I found Mr Scala very approachable and very reassuring. I had a previous unspecified problem with my eyes and despite my previous visits to the Royal Eye emergency department, nobody offered any diagnosis, so it was again very reassuring that Mt Scala could diagnose the problem during the first eye examination. Throughout the process (visits and the actual operation) I felt confident that I was getting the best treatment and care. I also very much appreciated the fact that Mr Scala was available via text and email when I had a question regarding my recovery. I received a reply within minutes and was also offered an additional appointment. Finally, the surgery was successful and i am not sure whether I would have got the same outcome with a different surgeon and sadly , definitely not on the NHS as the waiting time was not on my side.
