Mr Guido Michielon is an experienced Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon based at the Royal Brompton Hospital.
Mr Michielon qualified in Medicine from the University of Padua, Italy in 1987. Following this, he chose to specialise in Cardiac Surgery and he trained in top US cardiac units in Boston and Philadelphia. He finally specialised in adult congenital, paediatric and neonatal surgery. He was appointed as attending paediatric cardiac surgeon at Bambino Gesu' Children's Hospital, Rome in 2001 and went on to achieve the title of High Specialist in Aortic Root and paediatric valve repair. Prior to his current post, he worked as a paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon at UMCG, Groningen, Netherlands. He has been based at the Royal Brompton since 2015. Mr Michielon has performed over 2000 open heart procedures and as expertise in a wide variety of congenital cardiac procedures with a special interest in neonatal surgery. He is also fully trained in the 1st and 2nd stage Norwood operation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
Mr Michielon was part of the team to implant the first axial flow pump in a Heart Failure paediatric patient in 2010. Outside his clinical practice, Mr Michielon has extensively published in international peer-reviewed journals and holds research interested in transplantation, in particular, the failed Fontan procedures. He is licensed to practice in the UK, Italy and the Netherlands.
