About

Mr. Jonathan Bird qualified from UCL School of Medicine in 1997.  Joining the British Army whilst at medical school, he witnessed the highest standard of medical care afforded to our Armed Forces.  It was his experience in the army that first sparked his interest in orthopaedic surgery, particularly the treatment of knee injuries.  Service men and women are often required to perform physically demanding roles. It is crucial to manage their injuries with the best possible treatments, so that they can regain their fitness quickly, and resume their duties as soon as possible.

During his army career, Jonathan graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and rose to the rank of major. A secondment to the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory in Porton Down provided him with academic and research experience in the field of blast injuries. He saw active service in Iraq in 2004, working with the surgical teams in Basra, treating the injuries of both army personnel and Iraqi civilians affected by the conflict.

Having left the army in 2004, Jonathan took up specialist orthopaedic training in and around North London. He completed a prestigious Knee Fellowship at University Hospital Coventry before taking up his current NHS Consultant post at University Hospital Lewisham.

Jonathan is the principle knee surgeon at Lewisham Hospital specialising in knee injuries. He initiated the Acute Knee Service, so that knee injuries are rapidly identified and their treatment prioritised. He is also the Undergraduate Lead for medical students from King’s College London.

Jonathan also recognises the importance of continuing his own education in the field of knee surgery. He keeps himself up-to-date by attending international conferences so that he can share expertise with the world’s leading knee surgeons. He applies all this to delivering the very latest therapies and techniques to his patients in London.

Whether he is treating an elite athlete wishing to return to competitive sport or someone suffering with the daily pain of arthritis, Jonathan is dedicated to providing the best standard of care to his patients; to alleviate their pain, improve their functioning and restore their quality of life.

I first got introduced to Mr Bird when my Daughter asked me to assist her as a support when she was checked up for the knee operation he had done for her. I simply sat at the back ground and on that day I noticed his professionalism and eager to listen and advise. After 5 months later I too started to have an issue with my minuscus of the right knee. I did not have to think twice who my consultant would be. I am truly fortunate to have met Dr Bird and I would recommend him without hesitation to any Knee related issues. He just gives you the confidence that he WILL sort it out. Thank You very much for your support and Guidance.

Informative consultation but not joined up with back office. X-rays had to be summoned even though office knew they would be required and it’s been challenging to sort out surgery date with office so a little disappointing

I found Mr Bird to be very straight and to the point to help answer my queries and explained the next steps for me to think about in regards to my ACL reconstruction.
