Mr Lam is a most special individual. An excellent surgeon without being full of ego. His skill in his work puts him at the top of his field. He has empathy with his patients. A thoroughly nice man.
Mr Lam was the first specialist out of many who actually listened to me and has helped me so much! After having surgery I am so much better and I couldn't be happier with my choice of surgeon
360 double spinal fusion has gone well. Still in early recovery stages but has been well worth it and almost able to touch toes again after 20 years of degenerative disc disease pain!
Mr Lam is an extremely experienced spinal surgeon and is very personable and puts you at your ease. He operated on my cervical spine on 13 September 2017 for two prolapsed discs. He was unable to use replacement discs as the vertebrae were too stiff and immobile so he had to do two vertebrae fusions. He also enlarged both the foraminal openings, the left one was compressing the nerve in my left arm. The pain in my left arm is pretty much gone and I can use it normally again. I still have some pain across the back of my neck but am hopeful that will ease with time, its only been 8 weeks since surgery so early days really. I would recommend Mr Lam and hope that if and when I need surgery on 3 lumbar discs that he will be the surgeon that performs the surgery. All his staff are great too, Margot his registrar and his two PAs, Lorraine and Sophie, my only disappointment was the London Bridge Hospital, I was not that impressed with it at all.
About eight years ago, I awoke in the middle of the night with an excruciating stabbing pain, going right through my upper body from the back to the front. I can only describe it as 'a red hot poker' between the shoulder blades, slightly to the right of the spine. Thus began my search for first, an answer and second, a cure which would take me from the usual selections of physios / chiropractors and osteopaths, to supposed 'experts' specialising in spinal conditions and back to more 'alternative' treatments like accupuncture and Bowen therapists. I'll leave out the hideously expensive and time consuming details, but suffice to say it was easily the most frustrating and miserable time of my life.
Toward the end of this time, I saw Khai for the first time and at last, I had someone offering me hope. His diagnosis of a thoracic prolapse and associated disc degeneration led to a solution of a short section thoracic fusion. Eighteen months later, after a lot of soul searching, I committed to the Op...
Five months on and the results are dramatic. The lancing pain I had in my chest is now gone. The residual pain is merely from the scar tissue and I am back to living a full life again. I have now completely stopped taking pain killers and am swimming five times a week to regain fitness. Workstations and computer work are not recommended though, if you have to use them - get a standing desk!
I cannot praise Khai and his team highly enough. The man himself is funny, likeable and has a truely great way of putting you at ease. Above all, he is a brilliant surgeon. The aftercare is top draw and despite the invasive nature of the procedure, I could not have had a better experience. Spinal surgery is tough but if you commit to it, you cannot be in better hands. I've had the best experience possible with Khai. I'd give six stars if I could.
I have emailed multiple contact requests over a weeks time to Dr Lam's office, I've waited 2 weeks since with no return contact at all.
Had L4 L5 XLIF performed in late March at London Bridge hospital. Saw Mr Lam for a second opinion after my own surgeon suggested a cushion implant. He looked at my scans and movement and immeadiately gave a clear reason why the cushion would fail and not be the long term solution for me. Operation went very smoothly with expected pain in the first 7-14 days post op. Can now feel the improvement. Good service and care, with a clear sharing of the information required.
Mr Lam performed a fusion at L5 S1 following years of lower back pain. He is very approachable, highly skilled and meticulous in his approach. He clearly stated the risks, had a great team around him and the operation itself went without a hitch. As Mr Lam says, he has done thousands of these procedures and could do them with his eyes closed. He has continued to provide a good follow up service to the surgery, giving me guidance whilst monitoring my situation which is improving every day. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr Lam - he is the Rolls Royce of back surgeons.
I had a spinal fusion L4/L5 performed by Mr Lam on 3rd April 2017. I recovered well and am now in my 6th week of recovery and am getting better by the day. I also have a fractured coccyx which I had been told should be removed but Mr Lam is very much against that as it s a horrible operation and the wound there has difficulty healing. He has therefore done a steriod injection which so far is working. I found Mr Lam very approachable, always cheerful and reassuring. I was very well looked after at the London Bridge Hospital too. I can highly recommend Mr Lam.
Three level disc replacement done which went very well. Mr Lam has been fantastic throughout the procedure explaining options and all through to the operation. Follow up completed and could not have gone better. Very open dialogue and a tonne of experience allying any issues I had. Could not recommend highly enough.
Brilliant surgeon, after 20 odd years of lower back pain Mr Lam took one look at the scan and said 'this is what you need'. Friendly, polite and good at explaining procedures, recommended!
I saw Mr Lam following 7 to 8 years of severe back pain due to three degenerate discs (L3/4, L4/5, L5/S1). Over the past five years I have seen numerous "experts", had two lumbar Discectomy Decompressions and an Anterior Interbody Fusion. I was told each operation was successful and my back should now improve. In reality the opposite happened and my back deteriorated after each operation. Towards the end of 2016 I was in severe pain on a daily basis for months and I was told that I either had to learn to deal with it or have a two level fusion but that at 34 this was a major operation that might not provide results.
Feeling extremely fed up but refusing to believe that nothing positive could be done, I started to do my own research into surgeons. At this point I came across Doctify and read numerous glowing reviews for Mr Lam. He seemed a little too good to be true but after doing some research into Mr Lam, I thought it may be worth going to get his opinion.
Within about 15 minutes and following some x-rays, Mr Lam had turned my previous surgical opinions on their head. He explained why the operations had not been successful, how the advice I had received was wrong and what needed to be done to fix my back.
I am now three months post-op after having an XLIF at my L3/4 and L4/5, and then all three lower discs joined with metal work. Effectively, I had a three level fusion. Within weeks of the operation I knew my back felt different this time, more sturdy. My recovery has been quicker than any of the previous operations, despite it being a much bigger operation. I still have some pain but it is getting better every week and I finally feel like my back is really improving. It is better than it has been in a very long time.
I can't thank Mr Lam enough. I had started to think that I was just going to have to live with the pain and come to terms with my inability to do many daily/normal activities. Now my only regret is not seeing Mr Lam five years ago.
Go see him...
I had neck surgery in Jan 2017. The surgery was carried out at the London Bridge Hospital by Mr Lam. I had minimal pain after the procedure and the scar, once the dressing was removed, was fantastic.
Now 6 weeks later there is hardy any scar visible. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Khai Lam, he is an excellent surgeon with a very good bedside manner. He builds trust and confidence in the patient. He is very clear and informative on the whole process from beginning to end. I am delighted with my choice of surgeon.
Problems with L4/L5 for many years with degenerative disc disease. Mr Lam performed XLIF (eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion), the surgery was relatively painless (minor surgical pain but nothing compared to the lower back pain) and results have allowed to be free of pain and medication…..post 6 weeks surgery I’m 98% back to normal. Mr Lam was excellent, calm and measured throughout the whole procedure.
I received a double Lumber Spine operation from Mr Lam. The experience from initial appointment right through to aftercare was excellent. The operation was a success, a long recovery time however this was to be expected with an operation this size. The Facilities at London Bridge were also to a high standard and the professional care from the doctors and nurses was brilliant. Mr Lam was true to his word on initial diagnosis and limitations of the operation.
I had a prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement in the cervical spine and a anterior vertebrectomy performed by Khai Lam in mid October 2016 at London Bridge Hospital. From the first consultation to the execution of the surgery Khai Lam has been brilliant. My quality of life has improved significantly and I am extremely happy with the results of the surgery. The overall experience at London Bridge Hospital has been excellent.
Mr Khai Lam, performed a spinal fusion procedure back in October of this year, and everything went extremely well. I am now out of the pain that I was in for over a number of years. The after care was very good and the pain level after the op was to the minimal. I believe all of this was due to the skill of the surgeon to whom I would highly recommend. Mary Townend.
First class treatment, from diagnosis to aftercare with rapid timescales and high success rate (Lower spine lysis and cotisone)
Mr Khai Lam, was the surgeon who performed minimal invasive anterior posterior fusion with correction back in October of this year. I am pleased to say that it has worked and I'm out of the pain I was in, thanks to Mr Lam's incredible skills. Also, the pain was kept to the minimal, and my recovery over the last 9 weeks has been trouble free. I would recommend this fine surgeon to anyone considering this type of procedure Mary Townend.
He changed my life! Six weeks ago, I had a Cervical Disc Replacement performed by Mr Lam. I used to have lots of pain in my upper right back, right chest and arm. It's all gone, and I am now pain free! Everything went very well, and I did not feel much pain after the operation. I was anxious about the recovery, as I am very active, but I was already dancing tango after 3 weeks. I can now run, and I am off backpacking in two weeks. Mr Lam and his team proved to be extremely competent, professional, and reassuring during the process. Everything happened exactly like he said, and I do feel privileged to have benefited from his care and expertise. Charlotte Simon
Yet another glowing review! Khai Lam operates by M.A.S.S. (minimal access spinal surgery) which helps greatly with the recovery process. I recently underwent a 3 level spinal fusion in two stages - laterally (XLIF) and posteriorly (TLIF). I am still in the early period of recovery, awaiting the CT scan to check that fusion is progressing. Khai Lam gave great consideration before performing a 3 level rather than a 2 level fusion and ensured that I had complete understanding of what lay ahead. The best surgeon and such a nice man with a great sense of humour at all times. 10/10!!!
Since 2009, I had suffered with back pain. I was a very active person, playing lots of tennis at high level at university, running and netball. I saw various physios and oesteopaths, took part in pilates classes, yoga classes etc. I had previously had an epidural in 2012 and facet joint injections twice round in early and late 2015. I had further physio and despite some minor reduction in pain from the first set of injections the pain only persisted. I was at the point where I did not wish to spend the rest of my life on painkillers and sought further opinion.
From the first appointment, Mr Lam was confident that he could fix me and reduce the pain significantly by operating on the discs. At this point, despite my deterioration in condition I had not even thought about a major operation - I am only 27 and was very apprehensive about having major surgery.
Mr Lam was professional, reassuring and explained exactly what he could do. He knew what would work and was confident and after I had discussed previous treatments, he knew exactly what I was going through. He suggested I speak to some of his previous patients which was very useful. After seeing Mr Lam for a second appointment, I knew that he was the man who could fix my back and I decided to go ahead. I had two replacement discs (L3/L4, (L4/L5) and then a fusion on the lowest disc (L5/S1). Seven weeks on I can say that it is the best decision I have ever made. I have no pain in my back at all now most of the time and I am looking forward to my life ahead after physio and getting back to fitness and excited to get back to normal life and doing the things I love and enjoy.
Mr Lam and his team are top notch, talented, very supportive, reassuring and passionate and I could not fault their care and attention. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Thank you very much to Mr Lam (genius!), Margot and team.
Gold stars all round :-)
From start to finish Dr Lam was brilliant, he knew exactly how to treat and deal me as I was in considerable pain. The speed and the quality of the appointments, scans and treatments was exceptional. My back is so much better now and life is completely back to normal.
If I could give 10 stars I would. After an unsuccessful operation performed by another doctor, I had lost faith and trust in the profession. However Dr Lam, rectified this, his use of the most up to date procedures and medication, makes him in my view the best spinal surgeon in The world, let alone just London. If you're looking for a safe, competent and compassionate surgeon, Dr Lam is your man.
I went to see Mr Lam after several years of severe back pain. As soon as he looked at my scans he knew straight away exactly what was wrong and understood what I had been going through. Mr Lam explained everything clearly and precisely so I knew exactly what the problem was and how it would be carried out.
I needed to have 2 discs replaced and 1 fusion in my lower back. I was scared and thought this to be very drastic action to take. But after a lot of discussion, thought and research I knew that Mr Lam was the man for the job. I am four months on now and don't look back it was absolutely the right decision to proceed. Mr Lam and his team were all fantastic, sympathetic, helpful, understanding and work to a very high standard. They are with you every step of the way.
If there is anyone out there who has had the same prognosis I would wholeheartedly recommend Mr Lam for the job.
I have never felt so well so quickly after any of my previous surgeries. I am now almost free of back pain and making excellent progress. Three weeks since surgery I am completely independent, can drive normally and walk at least one mile twice or three times a day!
I would say Mr Lam is an amazingly talented operator supported by a very professional and efficient.team. I often wonder how much better my quality of life would have been had he operated on me back in 2008.
I fully trust Mr Lam and his dedicated team and would never consider going to any other surgeon for spinal matters. I would therefore strongly recommend him to family and friends and others. In this regard I would be more than happy to share my experiences with any of Mr Lam’s future patients.
I hardly ever write reviews for anything but I am so grateful to Mr Lam that it is the least I can do! Mr Lam has just completed an L4/L5 XLIF on my lower back and it is hands-down the best decision I have ever done. I was terrified about the operation, and very scared about the recovery afterwards but it was just reassuring to be under the care of someone who understood my concerns and who also understood how debilitating chronic back pain could be. Lots of other consultants had brushed my case under the carpet, telling me it was genetic and just something I had to put up with. When it got to the point where it was stopping me from doing normal activities, Mr Lam reassured me that this was not normal and I could be fixed. Mr Lam is at the forefront of research into back pain and the XLIF procedure in particular is such a good option for a speedy recovery with minimal disruption. Every single person who was involved in my care was polite, approachable and took so much time to make me feel better and safe. I've never had an operation before and it's a big decision to make, but I am just blown away by how much better I feel, how much my life has improved and how kind everyone was. Thank you so much!
I have just had 2 discs replaced and 1 fusion and I am delighted that I decided to go ahead with the surgery. Mr Lam filled me with confidence with the advice he gave me during the consultations and he has the most caring and professional manner. I can't recommend Mr Lam highly enough, he is without doubt an incredibly talented surgeon with an amazing team of professionals who support him.
Excellent caring and professional consultant. Have been seeing him with regards to back pain. Takes time to explain your condition and treatment options clearly and concisely. Would highly recommend his expertise.
I had been suffering with a Slip disc for 6 months, I saw various consultants and I found that the majority off them were very rushed and did not give me any attention at all
I wanted to know what was wrong with me, how it happened, options of surgery / non surgery, some appointments lasted less than 5 mins
I did not get any comfort from these consultants and although I needed an operation I couldn’t go ahead as I didn’t have a comforting feeling from the consultant.
I was then recommended to see Khai Lam, all I can say is that the experience with him was excellent ,on the first consultation he spent over an hour with me, Answered all my questions and explained to me ( in words I could understand), exactly what was wrong with me and my options of surgery / non surgery.
I had opted for surgery, Mr Lam Prescribed me some pain killers so I can manage the pain until the date off the surgery.
Mr lam did a full assessment on me, MRI, Xrays, I then had another pre assessment check up with him a few days before my op, Khai Lam and the nurse spent a good few hours with me, explain the procedure, risks, recovery times etc .
Even on the day of the surgery I was very scared and was having second thoughts, Mr Lam came to see me and to ask what my concerns were and he calmed me down.
Mr Lam came and saw me a few hours after surgery, made sure I was ok.
My surgery was a success and I’m very glad I went ahead with it
I would recommend Khai Lam to anyone with spine issues, He is a genius in this field, have a look at his glowing reviews on this and other websites.
I spent hours reading up on consultants and on Khai Lam, he is a pleasure to speak to, cares about his patients and is an absolute gent.
Thank you Khai Lam for your support and for getting me back to normal
The staff and service at the London Bridge Hospital are Amazing. Nothing is too much trouble for Khai Lam and his team. I can not fault anything. My diagnosis and treatment were prompt and fitted my agenda. Thank You all
I met Mr Kai Lam following several years of suffering with increasingly accute as well as slowly debilitating lower back pain L4/5.My local GP surgery in Borough Green Kent were appalling and despite having had private health insurance since my late teens all they did was prescribe me ever higher doses of codeine and naproxen to dull the pain.
Following a summer holiday in Aug 2014 where we had a small boat to explore the coast and following a day of choppy conditions I found I could barely walk and reached the end of my tether. On returning to the UK I immediately signed up with a local newly opened private GP,s who refered me to Mr Lam the following week.
We met and his supreme confidence and expertise was evident from the first moment I agreed without hesitation following discussions on my imagery to go ahead with the ADR replacement disc surgery the following Wedenesday.
I will never forget the focus in Mr Lams eyes as I passed him on my way to theatre it gave me 110% confidence.
Brilliant surgeon who cured my back pain. He came to see me everyday while I was in hospital and when he couldn't get in over the weekend he rang me to make sure I was recovering well. He is very caring and thorough.
Mr Lam recently conducted complex disc replacement + spinal fusion surgery on my lower spine, and the overall experience was superb: Mr Lam's clear professionalism and expertise, coupled with a caring and thoughtful manner, made me feel from the outset I was in the best of hands, and the process from diagnosis though to surgery, inpatient care and recuperation have been truly world class. I can't speak highly enough of Mr Lam's professionalism, ability and empathy, along with the strength of his supporting team, and would absolutely recommend Mr Lam to anyone considering similar surgery.
My 'new back' is truly in the process of changing my life materially for the better, in terms of ability to exercise, removal of chronic pain and allowing me to do the day-to-day things (eg playing with kids, driving material distances) I have been unable to do for so long. Thank you Mr Lam and team!
Within 5mins of my first consultation with Mr Lam I knew he was a life saver, after being refused & dismissed of my concerns by the NHS & request for an MRI scan, Mr Lam summised my condition & sent me for the MRI scan to confirm diagnosis of a slip disc "what a relief to my sanity". I cannot recommend him highly enough through all my treatments & answering my numerous questions to allay my fears. A true professional & happy to sound his trumpet as a specialist in lumber & all related back ailments.. I'm recovering from a TLiF op & for the 1st time in 2 1/2 yrs I'm finally pain free. Ms O Smith - London
From the minute I met Mr Lam I felt at ease and that I was in the hands of someone who wanted to help and knew exactly how he could. His diagnosis was speedy and his confidence put me completely at ease. This was my first surgery and considering it was a spinal fusion and ADR I feel fantastic. I will forever be grateful to him for giving me my life back. The care I received from him and his team has been incredible. I Cannot recommend him enough.
I am very happy with the outcome of my two surgeries with Mr Lam. Mr Lam said that my pain would disappear if I had surgery and it certainly has. A big thanks to Mr Lam and his support staff. All the best to future patients. You will be in safe hands with this kind gentleman. KT
My intake on this clever Surgeon, firstly he knew how to explain everything that matter to me clearly and was not afraid of any questions I had to ask him. Secondly he is very approachable. My experience was awesome, Dr Khai Lam gave me my life back, so now I can live a better life without pain.
Mr Lam has been absolutely excellent. I was referred to him due to severe pain in my leg caused by a nerve in my lower back. Mr Lam carried out two operations and I am now out of pain and have stopped taking all my drugs - I cannot thank him enough.
I found Mr Lam to be very easy to speak to, he explained in layman's terms what he was going to do and is very approachable with a good sense of humour. His administrative team have also been great when I have had any concerns following both my surgeries and have always tried to accommodate my need to appointments as late as possible due to work commitments.
Definitely 10 out of 10!
Mr Lam has used his advice and skills wisely and professionally when deciding to operate on my degenerating spine. I never felt under pressure to submit to his steady hands.
Since he operated on me my quality of life has dramatically improved ,both personally and in my work environment. He has given me the possibility of facing retirement with out chronic pain. . Spinal surgery is never undertaken without huge anxiety .
I felt I could trust him completely ---twice. I am eternally grateful to be mobile.
I have written this in good faith.

I am so grateful to Mr Lam for my recent operation on my spine at guys hospital which has been a complete success. When meeting him for the time my physical health was extremely poor and we discussed that there was only 50/50 chance of being pain free or increasing the pain with high risks, I needed to take that chance for my life to improve oh I am so pleased that I did. with full confidence and trust in him the surgery went ahead and on waking up the pain had gone and six weeks later on no medication my physical life has improved 100 % . I have grown 2ins in height have no pain in my legs allowing walking and standing again. It feels unbelievable after 7 years of pain . Mr lam is a very professional gentleman who makes you feel relaxed and an individual in his surgery. I must express my gratitude to Mr Lam for a new me, he will always be my hero and super surgeon xxxx
Mr Lam performed a lumbar fusion on me some months ago. The outcome has been beyond my expectations. He has helped change my life. Very positive experience all round and more than happy to recommend
