Mr Kieren Darcy is the Head of Corneal and Refractive Surgery at the internationally renowned Bristol Eye Hospital. He has higher specialist training in corneal, anterior segment and refractive surgery and runs the Corneal and Anterior Segment fellowship programmes at BEH. He specialises in complex anterior segment and cornea surgical techniques and is one of only a handful of surgeons worldwide that undertake the highly skilled Mushroom and tuck-in keratoplasty techniques for very advanced corneal disease. In 2017 he introduced to the South-West UK the latest innovation in endothelial keratoplasty, DMEK, which has seen a step-change in visual outcomes.
His patient feedback attests to Mr Darcy’s caring and compassionate approach. He has gained many awards throughout his career including the highly respected Harcourt Medal for gaining the highest marks in the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Consultant examinations.
Clinical research forms an integral role in Mr Darcy's practice. He is the principal investigator in a number of clinical trials. He feels ".. performing clinical research is vitally important. Our anterior segment research provides an invaluable evidence base to continuously improve the quality of care we offer. Equally importantly it means in Bristol I can gain early access, for our patients, to the latest innovative medical and surgical treatments, often well before these are available globally or the NHS". He regularly publishes in many of the leading journals and lectures around the world.
Mr Darcy has an exuberant passion to continually improve patient outcomes and the safety of eye surgery. He sits on the National Refractive Surgery Working Group at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where together with other like-minded professionals the standards expected to practice Refractive Surgery in the UK are raised through issuing new guidance on patient information, training & accreditation, consent and advertising to name a few.
