Mr Knight is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon, Honorary Senior Lecturer and Honorary Research Fellow who is globally acknowledged as a leader in Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery. He trained at St Bartholomew's and St Thomas' and undertook research training at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in the prevention of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
He worked as a consultant in the Royal Navy to support Orthopaedic staff deficits and went on to work as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Rochdale with an interest in degenerative disc disease.
Since 1990, he globally established the development of Aware State Spinal Diagnosis and Endoscopic Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery. He also introduced KTP 532 Laser Disc Decompression into the UK after evaluating the recurrence rate after percutaneous posterolateral tubular discectomy. He led a team to develop unique high technology surgical endoscopic equipment and Transforaminal Endoscopic Lumbar Decompression & Foraminoplasty (TELDF) in order to address a wide range of spinal degeneration and failed back surgery suitable for patients of all ages.
Mr Knight developed a "living" carbon fibre hip replacement which spontaneously resurfaced with living cartilage and was trialled successfully in greyhounds.
He is also involved in stem cell disc reconstruction, robotics and the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral fractures with SpineJack technique.
He has published research on spinal and referred pain, high-intensity zones, clinical outcomes following Foraminoplasty, Laser Discectomy, polymer disc reconstruction, endoscopic treatment of stenosis, degenerative deformity and failed back surgery and the economic advantages of Endoscopic Minimal Invasive Lumbar Spine Surgery, according to patient feedback.
Mr Knight has been the Medical Director of Spinal Foundation Charity since it was established.
He lectures nationally and internationally and was awarded Doctorate of Medicine by Manchester University in 2002 for a thesis entitled "The Evolution of Endoscopic Lumbar Foraminoplasty".
