Mr Burwell is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Circle Bath, Royal United Hospital Bath and in addition holds an honorary consultant appointment at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath where he runs the specialist hip clinic. He specialises in adult hip reconstruction including primary and revision hip replacement and hip resurfacing.
He graduated from the University of London in 1988 and undertook specialist surgical training in orthopaedics and trauma on the North West Thames Rotation based at the Royal Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He completed his final year of training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. For further development, he went to the University of South Australia and received advanced adult hip reconstruction as the arthroplasty fellow to Professor Don Howie.
Mr Burwell has developed a large expertise in all forms of adult hip reconstruction and joint replacement including the use of cemented and un-cemented hip replacement implants and modern materials such as metal and ceramic bearings. Mr Burwell continues with a trauma practice at the Royal United Hospital, in particular specialising in surgery for complex fractures of the hip and for fractures around previous hip replacements implants (i.e. peri-prosthetic fractures).
He is highly interested in research and currently involved with a british orthopaedic company in the development of a novel type of hip implant for use in younger and more active patients. With the same company, one of a group of surgeons involved in early clinical trial of a new bearing surface, which will wear less and lead to an increase in the longevity of hip replacements and reduce the need for 're-do' revision surgery.
