About

Dr Michael Kuo is a consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon at Birmingham Children's Hospital and honorary consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Michael Kuo graduated from the University of Birmingham and was trained in otolaryngology on the West Midlands Higher Surgical Training Programme. As Simpson Research Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Michael undertook research in the molecular genetics of head and neck cancer leading to a PhD in 2000. In 2001, he was elected to a Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Dr Kuo runs a comprehensive paediatric otolaryngological practice at the Children’s Hospital. Dr Kuo also provided a general adult otolaryngological practice at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for nearly ten years.

Michael is committed to both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching. From 2001-2008, he coordinated the teaching programme in paediatric otolaryngology and then co-founded the Birmingham-Bristol Intercollegiate Examination Course in Otolaryngology. From 2005-2008, Michael chaired the education and training committee of ENT-UK and since its inception, has been on the foundation faculty of the British Paediatric Otolaryngology Course.

Currently, Michael is a board member of the European Board Examination in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, seeking to harmonise standards in ENT surgical training across Europe and he chairs the education committee of the European Society of Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology.

Mr Kuo is one of the first surgeons in the UK to adopt an endoscopic approach to ear surgery wherever this is suitable in children.
