RM
General Surgeon
Headington, OX3 7RP
After graduating medical school in 1991 I spent three years training in clinical endocrinology, before moving to the UK and obtaining a PhD in endocrine surgery from Bristol University in 1998. I completed all surgical training in the UK working as a Lecturer in Surgery at Bristol University and Fellow in Endocrine Surgery in Oxford. In 2007 I was appointed Consultant Endocrine Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
My clinical work is centred on thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery with an annual workload of over 300 cases. I have developed the largest practice for open radical adrenalectomy for adrenocortical cancer and to date I performed over 350 laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic adrenal operations for benign adrenal tumours and metastatic disease.
Though adult operations represents the vast majority of my work, I see regularly children who need thyroid or parathyroid operations and I have an interest in familial endocrine diseases (MEN-1 and MEN-2 syndromes).
In parallel with the endocrine work, I remain involved in emergency general surgery and perform elective surgery for gallstone disease (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) and open hernia repairs.
I have a strong commitment to postgraduate education and I am regularly invited to teach student, postgraduate doctors and surgical trainees. For the last eight years I have been an examiner for the European Fellowship in Endocrine Surgery.
I have a strong interest in clinical research and in 2005 I was nominated Hunterian Professor of Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons. I was Director of Research in the British Association of Endocrine Surgeons and European Society of Endocrine Surgeons (2012-2017) and currently I hold this position for the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons. I am the co-author of the European guidelines for the treatment of adrenocortical cancer and for the use of neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery.
To date I wrote over 110 journal publications, 40 book chapters (details on www.radumihai.info) and I delivered over 100 invited presentations at national and international conferences. Currently I am principal investigator for a multicentre study of voice outcomes after thyroid surgery.
