Mr Ramesh Sivaraj is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based in The Midlands. He has a specialist interest in age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy, retinal vascular disease, intraocular inflammation and cataract surgery. He has performed over 5000 phacoemulsification and small incision cataract surgeries and over 7500 intravitreal injections. He also regularly carries out Stereotactic Radiotherapy (ORAYA) treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration.
Mr Sivaraj qualified from Madras Medical College in 1993, before undertaking postgraduate training in India, Birmingham and London. He completed Fellowships in vitreo-retinal, uveitis and cataract at Sankara Nethralaya, a prestigious missionary institution for ophthalmic care Southern India. Mr Sivaraj also completed Fellowships at The Moorfields Eye Hospital, Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre.
He was previously Diabetic Lead and Clinical Director at the Eye Department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He is now the Research Lead for Ophthalmology across the Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull sites & the Deputy Clinical Service Lead for Ophthalmology at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. In 2015, Mr. Sivaraj was awarded the Clinical Excellence Award for his work by the Macular Society.
Alongside his clinical work and research, Mr Sivaraj is actively involved in medical education. He was the Clinical Lecturer for Ophthalmology at the University of Birmingham for four years and is currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University. He recently received an Innovation Voucher from the university Aston towards the development of a free ophthalmology mobile app. He has several publications in peer-reviewed journals. Oxford University Press has published 'Diabetic Retinopathy: Screening to Treatment 2E' in Oxford Diabetes Library series, which was edited by him in addition to authoring a few chapters.

Mr Sivaraj is not only an excellent Surgeon & Consultant, but has great empathy with his patients. I was so grateful that he took time to explain, that his aim was to deliver the best result possible for me. This resulted in 20/20 vision without glasses.
