I am upper gastrointestinal surgeon working in Cambridge. I moved here in 2001 to establish the Cambridge Oesophago-gastric Centre at Addenbrooke's hospital. This unit provides surgery for a catchment of about 1.6M people and has some of the best results in England (see the national oesophago-gastric audit or NOGCA). I have a major interest in hernia surgery of all types, am a member of the British Hernia Society and perform the majority of my hernia repairs laparoscopically ( using keyhole surgery). This speeds up recovery and is less painful than open surgery. I has considerable experience in gall bladder and hiatus hernia surgery, again using laparoscopy. I am currently President of the Association of Upper gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (AUGIS) and lead Clinician for Audit at my Hospital. I believe that successful surgery requires complete trust between patient and Surgeon and strive to ensure this is a reality for all my patients. I pride myself on my communication skills but am always looking for opportunities to improve and welcome feedback from patients and Colleagues. Successful surgery needs a highly functioning team with good leadership; I aim to provide that leadership at all times.

I trained in the South West and was then a consultant in Cardiff before relocating to Cambridge in 2001 to establish the Oesophago-gastric Unit. I spent two years in research investigating a condition called Barrett's Oesophagus which is caused by gastro-oesophageal reflux (this causes heartburn). This condition is on the increase and has been linked to a rising incidence of gullet cancer.
I was a Lecturer in Surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary before moving to Cardiff University Hospital as Senior Lecturer.
