About

Mr Richard Sinnerton is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulder, elbow and simple hand conditions. He trained as a doctor at St. Thomas' Hospital, where he started in 1983. His speciality training in orthopaedics was based at St. Mary's Hospital in London and he became a consultant in 1998. His interest in shoulder surgery came about through meeting and working with Professor Pascal Boileau, widely recognised as one of the world's leading shoulder experts. Mr. Sinnerton spent a year as his Fellow in Nice in 1996. Following his return to the UK, he was appointed as a consultant at Ashford/St. Peters Hospital where he set up the very successful Upper Limb Unit. He now works full-time as an independent surgeon seeing both private and NHS patients.

Mr Sinnerton treats all conditions of the shoulder amd elbow and simple hand conditions whether caused by accident or over-use, through a sporting injury or arthritic and congenital problems. He selects the best of the new medical technologies to use along side tried and tested traditional techniques to provide the best tailored answer for each individual's concerns. His belief is that most patients, once diagnosed, only need time, rehabilitation and medication, surgery being required only if the symptoms recur.

He has developed a national and international reputation for using Reverse Geometry Shoulder Replacements to treat some of the most complex and disabling shoulder problems for which, until a few years ago, there was no solution. He teaches other surgeons this technique and recently was invited by the leading orthopaedic journal to write the definitive article on shoulder replacement.

He works very closely with selected specialist theatre nurses, anaesthetists and physiotherapists to ensure that the patient is looked after from their first visit through to their return to full and pain free function.

Mr Sinnerton has a very positive and upbeat manner. Whenever I saw him I felt at ease and in very experienced and capable hands. He clearly explained the cause of the pain I was experiencing and the options to resolve it. My operation was very successful. The keyhole cuts were tiny and incredibly neat. I would highly recommend Mr Sinnerton!

Mr. Sinnerton brought a very much appreciated element of real humanity and empathy to each interaction. His empathy is delivered along with great expertise of the technical elements leaving one feeling very well looked after, and in the most capable of hands. The requirement to ask a lot of questions is made redundant by his knack of covering the salient points up front, and tapping in to what matters for the individual. My experience of shoulder surgery and the results thus far have been extremely positive.

Fabulous experience. Richard explained everything in simple terms, he reassured me 100% I had a previous surgery for something else and it wasn't a great experience, so was reluctant to have another one. Woke up with arm above my head something I hadn't been able to do for 7 months. Follow up care was great. Would highly recommend him, as this has improved my quality of life 100%. Thank you Richard.

Rarely, for a surgeon, Mr Sinnerton’s approachable, considerate and inspires confidence with a casual manner that’s never patronising. I had a very painful frozen shoulder for 18 months and was referred to Mr Sinnerton through the NHS referral system but I was never treated indifferently. ‘Cutting’ through all the myths about Physiotherpay and other frozen shoulder remedies, he released it through keyhole sugery and the pain has gone, the range of movement improved considerably and, with post op physio, it will probably return to normal. He and the sugery had exceeded my expectations. He has my thanks and high recommendation.
