About

I qualified from University College London Medical School in 1998 and undertook my basic surgical training at University College Hospital, St. Mary's and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. I then joined the East Anglian Higher Surgical Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics. During this training I specialised in spinal surgery and, after gaining my Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, travelled to Australia for the prestigious year long AO Spinal fellowship in Brisbane.

I was appointed as a consultant in spinal surgery at The Ipswich Hospital in 2010. My practice involves all aspects of spinal surgery including trauma, deformity, infection, malignancy and degenerative conditions such as back pain and sciatica. My particular sub-speciality interests is cervical surgery and I have extensive experience in cervical disc replacement.

I have an interest in the non-operative management of back pain.

I have an established practice of spinal surgery under regional anaesthesia. This involves similar anaesthetic techniques to those used in caesarean sections to decrease post-operative pain and enhance recovery. This is attracting patients from around the country who can benefit from our expertise.

I consult privately at Gilmour Piper as part of the multi-disciplinary team. We hold a weekly meeting to discuss complex cases and plan individualised treatment tailored to patients particular problems.

I regularly undertake spinal medico-legal and clinical negligence work and provide operating services privately at both The Nuffield Health Ipswich Hospital and The Ipswich Hospital.

I am actively involved with the education of trainee surgeons and other colleagues, lecturing widely and internationally on many aspects of spinal surgery.

I regularly lecture to patient groups and can be followed in both Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Outside of work I am a keen musician and am happily married with two young daughters.

I have lots of neck problems, dating back years. A recent flare up which may or may not be disc or whiplash related led me to Mr Lovell. Mr Lovell is prompt, helpful, clear, down to earth and practical. Exactly what I need. Thank you

We would like to thank Mr Robert Powell for his time and patience. He listened to our concerns. During the examination, he took time to explain the cause of pain and the best way to proceed with treatment. We left the consultation feeling reassured and relieved that we finally had some answers.

I found Mr Lovell very welcoming and approachable. It was helpful to have been shown my MRI. It was very helpful to know the options I have but as a patient who has to pay I need to know costs before I can move forward with an informed decision.

Mr Robert Lovell

Thank you very much for your comments.

Service and experience was excellent from booking an appointment to recieving the treatment at the Nuffield. And again, the after care physiotherapist was extremely good, and easily accessible. Great experience all round.

Mr Robert Lovell

Many thanks for your positive comments. I will make the Team aware.
