He was an American British Canadian Travelling Fellow in 1992 and underwent other fellowships in Canada and the USA, including at the Mayo Clinic.

In addition, Mr Strachan is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and is the immediate Past President of Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery UK and until recently a member of the British Orthopaedic Association Specialty Committee. His research is mainly in knee conditions and surgical techniques and he has many professional publications and over 2800 academic citations noted on Google Scholar . He is also a retired Surgeon Commander, Royal Naval Reserve.

Since 1994 Mr Strachan has performed on average over 300 to 500 arthroscopies a year, 200 to 300 primary knee replacements a year and 35 - 50 revision arthroplasty procedures per year. He helps to lead training of junior orthopaedic surgeons in North West Thames and chairs the North West Thames Complex/Revision knee arthroplasty Multi-Disciplinary Team Meetings.
