I qualified from St Mary's Hospital Medical School in 1989, gaining honours in surgery and pathology. I was a junior surgical trainee in London, gaining my FRCS in 1993 and going on to specialist orthopaedic training in the southwest and a senior registrar in Bristol. I passed the intercollegiate FRCS (Orth) in 1999 and undertook Fellowship training in shoulder surgery with Mr Stephen Copeland, following which I was awarded the travelling fellowship of the European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery in 1999. I then took up my consultant post at RJAH orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry, and SATH NHS Trust, in 2000.
I undertake a wide variety of upper limb treatments, both operative and non operative, and have a specialist interest in arthritis and revision surgery, arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, shoulder instability, and rotator cuff surgery. I remain an active trauma surgeon and have a regular practice in upper limb trauma, post trauma reconstruction, and clavicle malunion surgery.
I am widely published, and lecture both nationally and internationally on shoulder and trauma surgery. Outside of work I am a (long) retired rugby player, active mountaineer, and play the guitar but my days in bands are in the past!
